Hey Guys---the weather is so nice I can
hardly sit still.
Last Wednesday went up north a ways to check out this little gig I
been hearing about called "Backfire Motorcycle Night." Hooked up
with my friend Karen and her friend Ray to see what the stir was
about---I liked it. It's an eclectic motorcycle gathering up on
Northwest 17th and Leary in Ballard. Its at a place called The Bit
Saloon (and is supposed to include a place called the Station across
the street, but they're closed for renovation or something) and is a
kick. Pretty much any kind of two wheel transportation goes and you
can find all kinds. It happens the third Wednesday of the month, so
write it on your calendar and go check it out---but have an open
mind and no rice burner jokes.[pictures on the web site]
The week end was great with a nice Chicken Friday starting it off,
family over on Saturday, to friends on Sunday and Memorial Day
Monday.
We hooked up with Mark the Shark Monday and headed down to
Destination H-D to hook up with the Vet's MC and ride on down to
Olympia. With three hundred plus bikes riding together to Oly it was
a real cluster in the making. But wait!!! It was almost like someone
knew what they were doing---Oh My Gawd, what a relief. At a cool
Fifty mph the ride was very enjoyable---and I can't say enough about
the professional way things were dealt with---believe me I let 'em
know.
In Olympia there was a nice ceremony with easily five hundred
bikes in attendance. All the usual things you would expect, but with
that down home rough around the edges feel that makes you
comfortable about the whole thing. I liked it.
A stop at the Nisqually Cafe on the way home, then try to figure out
where all these other vehicles were coming from and going
to.[pictures on the web site]
OK, so it seems that I got an e-mail from my cousin Linda a
while ago and didn't get back to her with a personal response, all
she got was one of these newsy, full of facts, personable,
entertaining e-mails---instead of dead silence. Alright Linda I'm
sorry for not addressing a personal response to you---feel better
now? Linda by the way lives in Reno, so should you be in the World's
Biggest Little City (or is it the World's Littlest Big City I can
never remember) stop in and say Hi. Linda said you're all welcome
for dinner or if you get there early enough--breakfast, and if you
need a place to crash I'm absolutely sure you'll be welcome.
Everyone wave to Linda and say howdy to my cousin whom I sure hope
can take a joke (now how do I make one of those smiley winky
things that has just a bit of a smirk?) OUCH--damn Linda not so
hard!!!!

Hey Guys---Some sunshine, some
rain---everything is growing like it's the middle of Spring.
Oh...yeah...it is.
New language to the State of Washington helmet law, limiting our
"helmet is a helmet" thing that got established a few years ago. Not
quite sure how this will work, but now I think you have to have a
manufacturers' statement inside your helmet. So stuff that may have
been legal a few years ago or anything that has had the interior
modified, may no longer be legal. But the new law does not go into
effect until 7/26/2009. I know of people who have gotten
tickets already, based on the new law, court should throw it out.
Don't be a sap and roll over, exercise your right to go to court,
even if you're wrong make them prove it (and pay to prove it) that
is the way the system is supposed to work.
Chicken Friday this last week was amazing. What looked to be a slow
casual evening, turned into a rocking get together. People showed
from all over and we had three tables going before it was time to
leave. Pencil in the twelfth of June (6/12/200) for a very special
Chicken Friday---it looks like there will be some far out of towners
showing up to eat a little Chicken; then we'll do the Squirrel's
show at the Tractor the next evening.
Saturday was gorgeous, had a seminar in Tacoma, so was inside most
of the day---but the ride to and fro was very nice.
Sunday hooked up with Bonnie Boop and Gary for the Snohomish Ride
through. As you know the Old Snohomish Antique & Classic Motorcycle
Show was cancelled. But an informal notion got passed around to be
in Snohomish anyhow---so we did. We left here 11:00am for a hotfoot
ride up there, we rolled in about noon o'clock and there were plenty
of bikes, but nothing like when the show was happening in the past.
We rode up to the top of the hill and found a place to park the
bikes so we could walk around town a little.
There were quite a few cops (10-12) all in a group across the street
from the Oxford Saloon, but everything seemed to be very casual. We
walked the street checking things out and didn't seem to sense any
edginess or bad feelings anywhere---everyone seemed to be in a
fairly good mood. Completing our circuit we hung out outside the
Oxford for a while and while we were there the Bandidos rode in,
occasioning some cheers from some of the sidewalk crowd. After that
we went into the Oxford and had a refreshing beverage, while there
the Apples showed up and it was like old home week, sure was good to
see some of them boys. http://www.heraldnet.com/article/20090519/NEWS01/705199868#Bikers.arrive.in.Snohomish.then.police
Here is a link to the Everett Herald on line and the article they
posted to represent the day.
Not long after, I finished my water and we had a nice long ride home
through Fall City, Issaquah and Ravensdale.

Hey Guys---welcome to May (yeah right) I've just spent the last
three weeks trying to get bikes in functioning order. I've been
feeling like the little Dutch kid with fingers in spewing oil leaks,
getting one stopped up only to watch another sprout. The Shovel (the
72) now seems to be functioning well enough and the Heritage (the
97) had to have the neighbor called in to lay hands on, but maybe
(everyone cross your fingers) I can take it down the road and go
Vroom, Vroom. Next the Panhead (the 59) goes up on the rack---maybe
this is the year.
Just need to catch up on a couple of things here real quick: First,
I want to thank Ken Olson for his kind words in the April edition of
the Washington Biker Information Guide E-zine, about my article in
the March issue of Thunder Press. It's not often you see someone in
one publication tell people to pick up another rag to check out a
story. I think that shows a lot of class and I appreciate the
mention. If you don't get the E-zine go to
www.BikerinformationGuide.com and get it sent to your own
personal computer---also look for the quarterly hard copy edition at
all your local motorcycle style hang outs, it's damn near pocket
sized.
I have a number of different internet accounts to accomplish
different things, as many of you probably do. I do most of my work
out of the Hotmail account and use my Yahoo account mostly for
storage. So if you really want me to see something send it to my
Hotmail address. Anyway, I was in Yahoo the other day doing some
housekeeping when I stumbled across a couple of letters I hadn't
seen---sorry I didn't get back to you Laura, do you still need that
info? The other was from Leroy Ackerson (the
X-man) which I have reprinted in the "Other Voices" section. Please
take the time to read the X-man's note, in the words of Eric Burdon
"it will be worth it."
OK, so went down to the Grand Opening of Downtown H-D of Renton last
week. This new facility, located in the industrial section of the
valley by Renton Motorcycle Works, is a nice facility. They put on a
whing ding of a party, and if you missed it---shame on you.
According to my sources there may have been as many as 5,000
people blow through the place on that day. Good food, lots of
familiar faces, a poker run to benefit animals (good job Jack) and
Funky Music going down in the city (?). Look for a Thunder Press
article in the June edition (I Hope).
As many of you probably know by now, the Old Snohomish Antique &
Classic Motorcycle Show has been canceled. Usualy the third Sunday
in May---not this year. While I'm not all that in the know, my
information says there was a stumbling block in what local law
enforcement was asking (dollar wise) to provide public security. Now
to the best of my memory, I've never heard of any incidents at this
event---to walk in asking a seven and a half fold increase in cost
for security is just out of hand. Someone has been watching too many
drive-in movies. To go from a cost of $4,000 to $30,000 is insane. I
think I'll find something else to do with my dollars on that
particular week-end---maybe someone should set up "Go Back" signs on
the edge of town. Keep in mind July 12th though when some of the
promoters of the Snohomish event will be staging a mini-show in
Sultan at the Sultan Shindig; a prelude to what the future in Sultan
may bring, good luck Sultan.

From my friend the X-man:
Hey Irish,
I was just sittin' here, smokin' a fattie and
sippin' some good scotch when I was reminded of a couple friends
from years gone by. I'm not sure why I think you give a shit
but,, here ya go.
My friend Steve was, for the lack of a better
term, a nerd. A college professor and interpreter for the deaf
at Mission College near Fremont CA, which is where he met his
wife Mary. Steve had a WAY over accessorized 550 Honda that on a
good day, downhill with a tailwind, might do 90. They loved that
bike and because it was the most dependable thing they owned,
rode constantly and we put in a lot of miles together.
Mary was probably one of, if not the most
naturally pretty woman I've ever met on the outside and by far
the warmest, kindest and most genuine person I've ever met. She
accepted me as I am, trusted me without question and I always
managed to understand her. Mary sounds just like any really good
girl out there,,,, and she was deaf.
Passing them one day in a hurry (I was in my
20s and always in a hurry), my "69" honda chop missed a gear at
around 10,000 rpm when I was closest. Now, this was part
"showing off" and part "missed a gear",,, should have been
harmless.
Whoopin' it up on the way by, I saw Mary
quickly cover her face. I immediatly slowed to see if she was
ok, thinking maybe the header spit out a hot piece of carbon.
When she turned I could see she was in tears, but wouldn't look
at me so I headed us off the highway.
As soon as we stopped I jumped off to see if
she was ok and thinking I'd just caused pain to a friend when
I saw her tears. She hugged me so hard she hurt, sobbing and the
only time I'd ever heard her make a sound.
Steve told me that when I went by, Mary heard
my bike.
At 23 years old, it was the first sound she'd
ever heard.
She had an extensive examination at 5 or 6 and
it was decided there were no nerves to attach hearing aids to,
so she would always be deaf.
For accuracy's sake, my little scoot was twisted up pretty
good. Cam (one), RC header, carbs,,, plenty quick. The 2"
baffle needed to be re-packed and was pretty loud. Now, missin'
a gear at 10k can spin'er to 13k pretty easy. That much sound
would have hurt any normal person.
It was decided that she had never been tested at that decible
level and when the doctors found out, she went back under the
knife, A short time later, I moved my family to Kent and
basically lost touch with them.
3 years later, I spoke with Mary on the phone. I don't
remember much of the conversation but, mostly she was tryin' to
thank me for something that you really can't thank someone for.
If that's the only good I do for the rest of
my life, I'm good to go.
After the last thing I sent to you I had to
think about it but,, I guess it's ok if you share this. You may
want to whittle it down some, I don't get in the mood to write
very often

Hey
Guys---Just a short one here to see if I can get back in the swing
of things.
Coming off the tax season, I'm usually a little burnt out from the
dash to the finish; this year there was more than one mitigating
factor. It was my first year on my own (to be perfectly honest it
was Marjorie and me on our own), and then in rapid succession the
Shovelhead blew a rocker cover gasket on the way home from one
Chicken Friday and the Heritage started making horrendous noises on
the next Chicken Friday. All this in the last two weeks of the tax
season---I didn't have time to scratch places that itched, let alone
fix bikes that didn't work. Well things weren't as bad as they
seemed on the one hand and worse than I hoped on the other. The
blown rocker cover gasket on the Shovel was better (and easier to
fix) than the blown head gasket I had first thought it was----but
the Heritage has ended up being much worse, having to do with
flattened cam followers and scored cams. I have some parts for the
Heritage, but am waiting on others to arrive. The Shovel is now up
and running (I hope, I hope, I hope) and I can use that for daily
stuff [if in a fix I can use the Ol' Lady's Sporty---we both rode it
up to last weeks Chicken Friday---don't think that will ever happen
again].

Hi
Irish,
I am not sure if you know Phil Weigel from Motorcycle Services Inc. He ran
the shop on the corner of Bailey and 13th in Georgetown. The only
repair shop open between the hours of 10 PM and 2 AM constantly
filled with piles of empty Henry Weinhard's bottles. He recently
had a bad fall and shattered his hip. He can no longer afford his
shop (there is some controversy over whether or not he’s actually
being forced out by the new landlord) after 36 years of operating
MSI there. He had been living in his shop and his house has fallen
into unlivable disrepair.
We are having an indoor community yard sale at my studio this
weekend to help raise funds to get his house in order and help with
his recovery. If you could pass this on to your folks, that would be
great and if you have some time or anything to donate you can bring
it by our place on Saturday.

Hey Guys---What a year it's
been. The major issues of the Economy, the Election, and locally,
the weather have been done to death, but never let it be said that I
wouldn't pile on when the opportunity presents itself.
The Economy---It has always been my impression (my hope) that the
major roll of government was to protect me from things that I wasn't
big enough to protect myself from. Aggression from other countries
through the military, natural disasters with emergency services, and
laws designed to reign in people or organizations, who through
malice or stupidity, would do me, my family or my community wrong.
The current round of "bail out" rewards sure puts those thoughts to
rest don't they? Last spring the government issued an economic
stimulus check to all individuals who filed a tax return, this year
we will be required to answer a question regarding whether we
received that money or not. This fall the government dealt out funds
in the Billions (that's some number followed by nine zeros) to
businesses that were directly responsible for fueling the growth and
subsequent collapse of the mortgage debacle. Do you think those
businesses will be required to verify the receipt and use of those
funds in any manner---I wouldn't bet on it---well actually I would,
spin the wheel Jack, I'll place all my money on no.
The Election---I don't care who you are or who you voted for, there
has to be a certain awe at what we just did. I have to admit, I
didn't vote for the man---as many of you know I vote third party.
But, the issue here is the potential for a fundamental change in
this country. It has been in my life time that we have seen changes
in basic bottom line social issues. Issues that at one time
threatened to tear this country apart. It's time. Even though I
didn't elect him, that's not the issue, the issue is---he's my
president, he's your president, he's our president and he deserves
our support until he proves other wise. I haven't been this excited
about an election since Jimmy Carter---and we all saw how well that
went.
The Local Weather---It's been said that everyone talks about it, but
no one does anything and I guess that seems like the truth over the
last two weeks. In my opinion what we just had (and we're back to a
blissful grey) was a half century storm. Something that comes along
every fifty years or so. Now I don't have a problem with not being
completely prepared for something like that. Paying for something
that will sit around and become obsolete before used, kinda speaks
for itself. But, I think, there was a lot to be desired in the
manner in which the local powers that be allocated the resources
that were available; and even more important communicating that
allocation. Leaving people stranded on street corners for hours in
sub-freezing weather is just a nonstarter. First priority has to
be---clear the bus routes and keep them clear, then use every means
possible to let people know what they need to do to get home. On the
other hand, if you don't absolutely need to be out there---what the
Hell are you doing there? This part of the country isn't made for
the kind of storms we just had and everyone needed to show a little
more common sense.
Whew, that all made me feel a little better---it's always nice to
strike out without fear of being counter punched.
On the home front---Marjorie retired this year and we're still
trying to figure out what to do with her---ouch, ouch, ouch don't
slap me again dear. The oldest son got married and not only did we
inherit a new daughter but a new granddaughter. The middle daughter
presented us with another strapping grandson---I do hope she's done
now, each succeeding child (three boys) seems to be bigger than the
last, at the rate they're going the next would be born full grown.
The youngest daughter completed all the requirements to be able to
hang out her shingle as a licensed (recognized? I'm not quite sure
of the correct reference) architect. All three kids have succeeded,
perhaps not in the manner they expected---but, they have succeeded
in making me proud.
Outside of the family---so to speak---the year was an on the go one.
The acquisition of the pop-up trailer and Marjorie having more time
available seems to have opened things up for us. The climax of the
year being the three part journey that included; here to Minneapolis
with Noah the grandson, route 66 and the trip home from So Cal.
ABATE has been a part of my life for many years. Now with the help
(hmmm is that the right term?) of many friends it has become a
larger part of my life. Don't forget the Rat City chapter meets
second Tuesday---keep an eye on the new Rat City web site as it
comes alive.
I never thought of myself as a writer---now I find writing consuming
a larger part of my functioning day. It continues to amaze me. Not
only that I seem to be able to do this, but most of all that there
is a group of people willing to put up with my ramblings, and
forgive my stumblings, as I try to figure this thing out. Susan Swan
and eddieboy have both been most kind (well, maybe not eddie)
in getting me to a point where someone actually paid for my
words---what a shock that is. [I do love you Ed---I've missed your
witty reparte' the last few months---but if you quote me on that
I'll deny it]
What a year it's been---can it get any better than this?
I think I might build a fire in the driveway New Year's Eve---if
you're not doing anything...

Hey Guys---You might find this hard
to believe, but it's snowing again. For those of you outside the
area, we've been locked down, pretty much since the 13th of the
month. Seattle and the surrounding area was not built for extended
snowfalls, and I'm tired of it. Give me a normal, natural gray; a
neutral background that allows you to showcase the colors around
you, instead of this all encompassing white that smothers us. Aww
well, this is the Pacific Northwest and I know it's only a matter of
time before the rains come again. There are some things that are
inviolate---death, taxes and the rain in Seattle.
It's no suprise that this time of the year has been the celebration
of life, new birth, new year and rededication down through the ages.
Even though it has been perverted into new stuff, new debt and high
stress, try to reach through to the true intent. Make a donation
somewhere where it makes a difference in someone's life, invest some
time in someone else, reconnect with those that have drifted away
and make an attempt to strengthen those ties that are so important
to all of us. You don't have to be a believer in any specific
phylosophy to reap the benefits of the season. I'm not a strong
believer in any direction, but I love the music this time of year,
because it makes me feel good. Find something that makes you feel
good.
Another thing that made me feel good was Another Chicken Friday
Christmas. We managed to sneak in between storms for a great
celebration. A great spread was provided by Linda and the Barrel,
people near and far made the trek, songs were sung, stories were
read and those not there were missed. The Holy-days are meant
for sharing, the more you share the less greed, spite and anger
there is in the world---a good celebration is an exercise in sharing
and I need to get more exercise. Thanks to all who made the effort
to show for Another Chicken Friday Christmas---I thought is was
worth it. [there are pictures on the web site]
I'm gonna try and do some sort of recap next week---if you've got
something specific you want mentioned, let me know. Otherwise
suspend some disbelief, stiffle some cynicism, hide the hesitation
and embrace.
Merry Christmas
Happy Hanuka
Cheerful Kwanza
Fine Festivus
and good Holy-days to you
If Ya want me ta know somethin Ya gotta tell me.

Hey Guys---What's
all this white crap all over the road? Seems some places didn't get
a whole lot of snow, but from where I sit it's still white and icy
outside my window. The word is there's more coming this evening.
Last week was a busy week---we started with Second Tuesday and the
Rat City ABATE meeting. The discussion was lively with a full slate
of officers and positions being filled during the evening. Against
my better judgment I allowed myself to be roped into the
coordinators position. I am excited about the enthusiasm and
commitment from those in attendance---only time will tell but I got
a good feeling. If you haven't joined up yet you still have a
chance---there's plenty to do---the more hands the easier the
work...the more time for play. Keep an eye on the new web site---www.ratcityabate.org.
Thursday evening we stopped by the Twilight Zone in West Seattle to
check out the Tarts new art exhibit. This is the first time the
three of them have exhibited together since they started the
Twilight Artists Collective. If you haven't been to the Twilight
Zone, it's just around the corner from Easy Street Records at the
Junction. For a limited time only you can probably still pick up a
postcard with a picture of "The Clause" and the Tarts in festive
attire---good only while supplies last.
Friday (and Sunday) was the products show at the Qwest Field Event
Center. The show---officially known as the Cycle World International
Motorcycle Show, but that's too many words and besides what it is is
a product show---showed the effects of the slow economy. Friday
night was spent in or close to the ABATE of Washington booth, no
roaming the lot. The ride home that evening was cold and wet, with
sheeting rain coming up I-509 from the first ave bridge. Sunday was
ice and snow so no bike.
Saturday was my favorite the Tacoma ABATE YWCA Women's Shelter Ride
(not just another toy run). The morning was cold and dry. As has
been the case more often than not lately we headed out alone to make
the event. Hooking up with enough time to get breakfast and warmed
up at the Haven in Parkland, the turnout was smaller this year than
last year, even though the temperature was warmer this year, I
think. The added pleasure this year was the participation of the
Demonos Car Club and their hot rods. A wrap up at the Right Spot
with some food and beverage, then home again in the cold. By ten
o'clock that evening there was snow on the ground. [pictures on the
web site]
Don't know what's happening with the Biker Friendly Bar site---maybe
everyone has started their holy-day schedules already.
::::::::::::::::::::::::::::::::::::::::::::::::::::::::::::::::::::::::::::::::::::::::::::
Coming up:
12/19...Another Chicken Friday Christmas at the Barrel Bar. I'll be
there about 6:30pm. We've set up for a buffet style meal for the
evening---Lind, I'm sure, will pleasantly surprise us with a
selection of delightful victuals. Come join in the spirit of the
holy-days and the holidays. We'll sing some Carols (or chase some
Carols---whatever moves you), read the Night Before Christmas and
enjoy each others company.
12/24...Mimosa Christmas Eve at Tacoma V-Twin---come in for some
cookies and juiced orange juice. Open at 10:00am close at 5:00pm (or
when everyone goes away).
12/25...That special day of contemplation and family celebration.
Merry Christmas and happy Holy-Days.
12/31...The Eve of the New Year. Be careful out there...stay out of
trouble. I think I'll build a fire in the driveway.
1/1/2009...The Dawn of the New Year and better things for all.

Hey Guys---Did the State
Toy Run on Saturday---those of you that decided not to partake,
missed one Hell of a day (ask the Shark, he'll back me up). Hooked
up with Mark the Shark, Joe and Lola in Des Moines and rode the back
way to Tacoma to hook up with Ernie at Tacoma V-Twin. From there it
was Freeway flier to Lacey for the Pack-up. The show was 10,000
strong (and no I didn't hit one too many zeros). Got to spend a
little time with Turtle Ken---he's such a nice guy, it's strange how
they keep letting him run around without a leash---make sure to
check out the Gotcha pictures at
www.BikerinformationGuide.com you just might see someone you
know.
Had a chance to chat a little with Dutch "Dragoni" he's back on the road
(finally) after a debilitating accident----seems like almost ten
years ago--not really, just seems that way. You gonna have
pictures
on the
BFB Dutch? That's where we get reprinted on the occasion that
I actually write something worth reading.
Olympia Toy Run 2008 Highlights By: Dragoni
Got to squeeze the Mailman quickly---always a pleasure to see the
Mailman, but the question of the day was where was that ray of shine
Helen?
Gimp, Ruufie, Jaybird, Pam, Arnie, Mick, Lyle, X-man---all put in
appearances, some even came for the curtain call at the Nisqually
Pub. To answer that burning question everyone has on their
mind---No Brer Squirrel and Sam the Howler were not there. [pictures
on the web site]
Those behind the curtain have decided they needed to change my
little web site thingy---but I think if you get on the site and
click "pictures" you can see all the folders and thereby all the
pictures---let me know if you have a problem and I'll shrug my
shoulders and say "AWWW that's too bad" in a soothing voice.
Tomorrow is second Tuesday----Rat City Chapter ABATE meeting---We're
going to elect a new slate of officers, so it's important that you
be there. If you are not a member you can still be involved. Those
that show, fill out the form, and pay their dues are considered
members at that moment. You don't have to own a motorcycle or even
ride---belief in freedom of choice would help---but Hell diversity
of opinion is important in anyone's growth. Come be
involved---that's the most important. Emerald Green Restaurant
(across the street from where Downtown HD is now) 6:00pm Social
(good time to sign up if you haven't already) 7:00pm meeting (Joe I
expect to see you and Lola)
Friday is the Products show at the Qwest Field Event Center---this
is one of those things they charge you money to get in so they can
show you things that you can buy. The show is three days this
weekend---I'll be there chained to the ABATE booth Friday evening,
being abused by that slave driver Mike Campbell. Come by say "Hi" or
any other expletive that crosses your mind---let me take your
picture---maybe I'll let you take mine (remember I have a tendency
to make obscene gestures or drop my drawers for photos but it's up
to you).
Saturday is the Tacoma ABATE toy run supports the YWCA Women's
Shelter (not just another toy run)---this is the one I wait for all
year---leaves from the Haven in Parkland at 12:30pm Breakfast starts
at 9:30am---leave here to head for Parkland at 10:00am---join me for
this one.
December 19th should be circled on your calendar, if you don't make
any other Chicken Friday you need to make Another Chicken Friday
Christmas. Nothing says Traditional Christmas celebration like a
bunch of bikers singing carols at the Barrel. I've made arrangements
for Linda to put out a spread for us (please feel free to help me
defray those costs, I won't be embarrassed, but I'm not gonna beg I
don't beg---well in certain circumstances just a little......).
There are other events taking place this weekend---please check the
web site for fliers for other events you might be interested in.

Hey Guys---Hope everyone
had a good weekend this last weekend---full of turkey and the
trimmings, football, family and friends. We bopped over to Sean and
Jenn's Friday evening, early, for an informal graze and stint by the
fire, before heading back to the Barrel for a slow Chicken Friday.
Thanks for the invite guys---it was nice. 'Course that was what
the weekend was all about---Thanks---wasn't it?
Speaking of Thanks---I have been chided for not mentioning Squirrel
and Sam the Howler in the last letter. They made a special effort to
be at Chicken Friday on All Hallows Eve and I didn't say how much I
appreciated them making that effort---should I have done this
paragraph in caps or do you think this will suffice? {They were, of
course, on the way to Jimmy the Troll's but we won't say anything
about that.} I do love you guys (how do you make one of those winky/smiley
things???;)???
Saturday we rode down to Destination to take part in the Vets'
Children's Hospital Ride. This is such a weird little ride, you
start out from HD, ride to the Hospital, circle it and then the ride
just seems to fall apart. We didn't even stop to wave at the kids in
the windows this year. Weird!!! [pictures on the web site---if I
haven't pissed someone off---they sure pissed me off, changing my
shit without asking---what kind of crap is that?]
Anyway, after that the Ol' Lady and I rode over to Tacoma V-Twin (on
South 56th & "M") to visit with my friend Ernie. Like all retailers
he's sweaten' out what's going to happen to business for the
Holidays---(You know if people are so uptight about saying things
like "Happy Holidays", then all they have to do is say it the way it
is supposed to be said. It's not about something you hang from the
ceiling, but about something religious---Holy not Holly.)---so if
you're looking for a little something drop in and say Hi to Ernie.
Got into the Facebook thing this week---not sure I understand, but
did manage to track down some people I haven't seen in years.
I told you about the photo shoot with the Tarts from Twilight
Arts---well I got some of the pictures, they're on the web site---if
you can't get to them there, they're also on the Facebook thing.
###Saturday is the State Toy Run in Olympia, planning to leave here
at 9:00am to head for V-Twin in Tacoma. We'll hook up with
others and plan to leave from there about 11:30am. The gates open at
South Sound Center in Lacey at 10:00am, parade at 1:00pm.###
***Next Tuesday is Second Tuesday---that means Rat City ABATE

Hey Guys---We are definitely into the short days of the year, I
don't know if I like the way they've moved the end of daylight
savings time farther into the short days. There doesn't seem to be
any run up, ya know? Suddenly it's boom, dark at 3:00pm. Well, let's
get caught up on some things---All Hallows Eve was a gas. We made it
until after Midnight. Starting at the Barrel for a well attended
Chicken Friday, we rode from there to the Junction in West Seattle
to spend some time with the Tarts at the Twilight Arts Halloween
Party. If you haven't been to the Twilight Zone yet you should make
the time for a swing by. They have two locations; one around the
corner from Easy Street Records at the Junction in West Seattle and
the other in the bowels of Pike Place Market. Either is a pleasure
to spend a few minutes and you just might find that one little item
you need to fill a corner in your home or that one gift you just
never seem to get right. Tell 'em Irish sent ya'. It won't mean
anything, but it'll make me feel good. (Look forward to something
from Twilight for Christmas---I did a photo shoot in close proximity
to the luscious Tarts in Christmas attire---as soon as I see
something so will you---watch the web site.) So, after rubbing
elbows, shoulders and other anatomical parts with the beautiful
Tarts, we headed back south to Jimmy the Troll and Jerrilee's party.
Comfortable atmosphere, good friends and a great spread, we spent a
couple of hours (or until I ran out of beer---which ever came first,
cause Jimmy only drinks Bud) and then headed back to the Barrel. At
the Barrel it was good tunes kickin' out, more food spread around
and more friends. We even danced a bit---and anyone who knows my
knees, knows that don't happen often. As I said earlier, it was
somewhere on the dark side of midnight when we rolled home. And from
home I didn't move the next day, as something that evening didn't
agree with my poor tum-tum---I wonder what it could have been?
Moving along to Second Tuesday and the Rat City ABATE meeting. I
couldn't have been more pleased. In the words of some famous elected
guy "Let me say that again"---I couldn't have been more pleased. We
had eight new members join that evening and I feel like it is just
the beginning. I have already heard from others who said they
couldn't make that meeting but will be at the next. It seems like we
have the chance to turn a new page here. So, don't be left
out---Second Tuesday---next month 12/9---Emerald Green
Restaurant---6:00pm social, 7:00pm meeting---don't be left behind on
this. Linda and I have scheduled Another Chicken Friday Christmas

Hey Guys---It's a week since the finish of, what is
arguably, one of the most important elections in the history of
the United States. It has been said that desperate times select
great people---let's hope that is the case this time. We have
taken one step through the door into a new century, and as of
this point, I'm not sure it has been a forward step or a
backward step. At this time we are plagued with war, a
degenerating environment, religious strife, economic collapse on
a global scale, class struggles in our own country, and the
potential of global pandemics. As a child of the great science
fiction writers of the twentieth century, I have been given a
vision of the twenty-first as the beginning of the utopian era.
Have I been fooled? Or, do we have it within ourselves to take
those next needed steps forward?
Today is Veteran's Day---in Canada it's called
Remembrance Day---a day to reflect on those who gave. It is
important to take time to remember those who gave in times of
strife, but it is equally as important to give respect to those
who gave in times of peace. Take a moment today to reflect on
someone you know, not a symbol or an idealized individual, but
someone who actually touched you. Take a moment to think about
that person and what they gave---to you, to their family, their
community, their country, their world---and then take some of
that and give it yourself.
Tonight is second Tuesday, come join me at the Emerald
Green Restaurant for the Rat City ABATE meeting---6:00pm social,

Hey Guys---Did you ride to
vote??? Did you vote???----remember he who votes not, bitches not.
The most important issue on my mind currently, is the Rat City ABATE
Chapter meeting next Tuesday. I've spoken with a number of you
already. Quite honestly we need help. The two primary officers left
town and the chapter is floundering. This is the chapter closest to
Seattle and should probably be the largest in the state, but it's
one of the smallest. We need some involvement. Are you ready to be
involved?
The questions I get are "What does ABATE do?" and "What does Abate
do for me?" For the answer to the first question take a minute to go
to www.abate-wa.org and just
cruise around the web site. For the answer to the second question, I
think it's the wrong question. The question should more properly be
"What have you done for others?" ABATE is a medium that can help you
do for others through something that many of us love to do anyway.
ABATE is a motorcycle based activity. It's an opportunity to
help others, through an organization that has arisen from the biker
lifestyle, and thereby help yourself. Don't have a bike? That's OK,
as long as you believe in the freedom of the road you qualify to
belong.
Please, join us the second Tuesday of the month (11/11/2008 7:00pm
meeting---6:00pm social hour) at the Emerald Greens Restaurant

Irish, I went to the "To Honor" website. I have a personal interest
in this as well because, like you, I was a full time caregiver for a
woman for 2 years. I had eight hours on Monday to myself when a
relief nurse would care for Gracie so I could get a break. This
seems like a wonderful idea. The problem I see is finding someone
to do the caregiving while they are gone.
Hope to see you and Marjorie again soon.

Cousin Mavis from Coquille Oregon:
i think its probly sincere - i did several reports on respite care
while attending swocc - worked at the nursing home at the time and
my fave little old ladies were the still ambulatory alzheimers
ladies - had to keep a real eye out for them - was pulling in to
work one day and had just passed one of them on the street - got a
bunch of nurses to go round her up - 5 more minutes and she would
have been on a side street and much harder to find.
anyway - i didnt know about m's ma - so nice that she had that time
there and that it was a family effort. i really feel for the old
couples who are facing that alone - that generation doesnt know how
to ask for help - and if they get to where they finally will ask for
help dont know where to go for it. and they get sick from the
stress - sometimes die before the partner does. respite care is
very important. 'sawful

OK--I have a story to tell--I've been debating for a couple of weeks
whether to do this or not---Sometime in the deep dark past, about
the time that Marjorie and I got married, her mother came to live
with us. Marjorie's mother, Ginger, was just entering the end stages
of Alzheimer's disease. She was still fairly functional for short
periods of time, but lost names quickly and had to be told things
multiple times. There were four of us at the time, Marjorie, myself
and the two kids---yes even the kids had responsibilities for Granny
Ginger. I was in the Music business and would come rolling in at
3-4:00am. It was my responsibility to be with Ginger while we waited
for her day care to pick her up---everyone else was at work or
school. There was enough of a pattern established that Ginger knew
someone was supposed to be there---just not quite who "they" were.
Ginger was a nice person, yet even nice Ginger got to be a handful
when her anxiety level began to rise---imagine large gaps in your
current knowlege, things you never thought you'd forget---like the
names of your family and where you were. There were four of us and
we worked hard at trying to keep Ginger involved in her family's
life---imagine if there was only one. Even the four of us couldn't
stop the fateful accident; Ginger fell and broke her hip. Imagine
waking and finding yourself in pain, somewhere--somewhere you knew
you weren't supposed to be. You couldn't get to the pain because
someone had taped it up---what hurts? I have to find out what hurts!
They had to strap her down because she kept trying to tear the tape
off the sutures where the operation on her hip was. Ginger
eventually got through all this, but we realized that the four of us
could no longer take care of her at home. We got Ginger into a home
and luckily she had enough money to cover the care. Can you imagine
if there had only been one and the money hadn't been available? The
trauma pretty much striped Ginger of her ability to communicate with
the world around her, yet she lived on for five more years. When she
died the people who cared for her missed the lady with the sad
smile. Why have I told you this story? Do I want something? Yes. I
found this web site and I would like you to tell me what you think.
I think it's sincere, I want to know your opinion. As all of us
become older and start to think about having to take care of each
other in the future, maybe we need this. Please go to
www.tohonor.org and tell me what you think. If Ya want me ta know
somethin Ya gotta tell me.irishmckinney@hotmail.comwww.irishmckinney.spaces.live.com

Hey Guys---Been a while
since we talked. Nothing going on to distract anyone. Elections,
Wars, Collapse of the Western Market System, Scandals,
Pickles-pickles everywhere---I don't want a pickle, just wanna ride
my motorcycle.
Passing along the word from Bruce Arnold---ride to
vote. We've been taken for granted for way too long---time to
show our strength---ride to vote. Let me add my two cents---vote
third party. The two major parties think they have some
Constitutional given right to exist---they don't, read the document.
Nowhere in the Constitution does it say anything about political
parties. The Majors are bureaucracies and the job of a bureaucracy
is to perpetuate itself in the least strenuous way possible. Look
around, you really think there are only two people running for
President of the United States? The Majors have locked everyone not
affiliated with them out of any significant involvement in the
process. They are like two trains going head to head---they don't
move without some outside influence; that's why we see the same crap
recycled and fed to us over and over again. Ride to vote---vote
third party.
OK, moving right along. Oyster run. Not really a run anymore, more
like a rally. There were five bikes--Carol, hangin' Chad, Bonney
Boop, Gary and us--in our group that left out of the Barrel parking
lot that Sunday morning. Becky and Rick and a group of their friends
had just pulled out. Littel Jer, Merry Mary and Vern were on their
way even earlier. We made our usual stop at the rest stop at Smokey
Point and added another bike to our group. They were just wandering
around looking lost---what could we do?
Just up the road from the rest stop the whole freeway came to a dead
stop. We'd come too far to hit the off ramp, but the on ramp was
right there and it wasn't being used. I made my way over, kicked one
of the blocking cones out of the way and up the down spout I went.
Others in the group followed---last I saw, cars were turning to
follow. What can I say "come on babe follow me and I'll show you
where it's at". It was only one ramp further on the frontage road to
a clear freeway . Then we were in Conway.
Gimp, Ruufie, Jaybird, Pam, Uncle Butch, Aunt Lyn, the whole crew
showed there. Other familiar faces---it was like home room. A short
stop and it was overland to Anacortes.
Gawd---was it crowded. I heard ranges from 15-20,000 bikes. Maybe
it's time to think about a multiple day event? We didn't stay long
(I heard a lot never even got there---the roads were so bad) the
roads out were pretty jammed up by the time we left---but, that's
why roads have shoulders.
Down the Island, a meal in Oak Harbor and on the ferry. Even though
we called a short day it was after dark when we got back to the
Barrel. [pictures on the web site]

Lucy I'm sorry, I should have gotten in touch, but I
just---lost---track. My fault I owe you one.
Last Saturday we rode around Hood Canal. The Ol' Lady and I were the
only ones to ride the ferry to Southworth. It was a very cold ride
to Purdy and about half way down Banner road it got foggy. But, we
got to the Floatation device OK and hooked up with four other bikes
who came over the Bridge---Mark the Shark, Uncle Buck and Spinner,
Joe and Lola, and Mikey.
After breakfast it had warmed some and continued to warm throughout
the day. We hit Towanah Park, Union Tavern and Hoodsport Cafe. Mark
the Shark owns a postage stamp piece of property just before Brinnon
and the women spent their time nipple shopping???? On the other side
of Brinnon we visited Gary's Falls---we did not patronize the
Geoduck, please do not patronize them.
From the Falls it was over the river, through the woods, over the
bridge, and around the corner to the Four Corners where Eddieboy met
us. Nice visit, maybe one of these times I'll get you to go on the
full ride. Thanks for showing Ed, it's only been about five years
since I offered to buy you a beverage---come to think of it I still
haven't bought you a beverage---oh well your turn to buy next time.
Once again dark by boat time, home by headlight. Thanks everyone who
went---great day. [pictures on the web site]

Hey Guys---Just a very quick
note---looks like it's going to be nice this weekend. Anyone up for
that Hood Canal ride this Saturday? There's a 9:15am boat from
Fauntleroy Saturday morning. Think I'll catch that one, head for
Purdy and have breakfast at the Floatation Device. So, we'll be
there for a while if anyone needs to catch up.
It's a Saturday so we can take our time and not have to worry
about catching an early ferry on the way back.
Ed what you up to? Got time for a beverage?
Any of you guys down south fancy a ride? We could meet you at the
Flotation Device. This could be our last chance---I can feel the
rains coming.
Let me know---but one way or the other I'll be at the ferry Saturday
morning.

Hey Guys---been pretty much a slug
since getting home. Not a whole lot on the calendar in the near
future---except Oyster Run. Let's talk about that. I figure to leave
9:00am (or so depending on response),
heading for Conway--with a short stop at the rest stop somewhere around
Arlington
(just cause that seems to be where we need it.) A short stop in Conway to
prime things up and on to Anacortes. To me the objective is to get
in early and get out early.
If anyone is interested then I'll plan to leave the Barrel at 9:00am on
Sunday
(did you hear that Gary? leave at nine).
We didn't get to take our Hood Canal ride this year---anyone interested
in trying to squeeze in a
Saturday ride around the Canal with a visit to the Water Fall, but not the
pub in Brinnon?
Leave early enough for breakfast in Purdy?
Not a whole lot else this seek, so I'll leave you with some---

I'm about as jealous as I've ever been. Your trip with your grandson is
without question,
a time you and he will treasure for the rest of your lives. I thank you
for allowing me to take part,
however remotely in your travels.
I, like everyone else had two grandfathers, but one left this world
before I was born and I only met the
other briefly when I was 4 or 5. I rode with him to the store during that
visit, and on the return trip,
he sat in the passenger seat with his feet on the pedals while I drove his
Lincoln home,
standing on the driver's seat.
My mom was so beside herself when she saw us pull in the driveway, we
had to end the visit.
She couldn't forgive him for taking what she felt was an incredibly stupid
risk with her child.
I never saw him again, and he passed away a short time later, but I will
never forget those few short
moments,, seen through my young eyes.
You've given that youngster an experience that will be a building block
in the sculpture of his being,
his very soul. The last few weeks will be part of every decision he makes
and every life he touches,,
long after you're gone.
Now I know you don't need to hear this from me, but I'm gonna tell you
anyway. I'm proud for you.
I hope I live long enough to to see my grandchildren, and maybe get the
chance to be an influence in
their lives.
You have given something to me also.

Hey Guys---In case you didn't
get the Tra La La (or understand it) we're home. We rolled in about
9:00pm Sunday evening. After San Diego we rolled north to Rancho
Santa Margarita (if that ain't a mouthful) to visit friends Craig
and Trisha. A nice evening meal with them at a place called "The
Oaks" where the trees grow up through the floor and the ceiling.
Over a thousand ties hang from the rafters---you may walk in with a
tie, but you don't walk out with it. Does my heart good. In the
morning they took us to the famous Cook's Corner in Trabuco Canyon
for breakfast. There we met Ray French, local character and friend
to the stars. You know that a lot of what he was talking about was
true---but where was the line? I think we bonded. From "Hangin Out
at Cook's Corner", it was straight west and take a right at I-5.
Through La La Land, over the Grape Vine and into the San Joaquin
Valley. In the whole trip I hadn't felt a sense of desolation until
here---there's nothing. At mile marker 334 we turned east and found
a campground at Visalia for the night. (Sorry Susan, but somewhere
in the transition we missed the dealership. I could have possibly
run into it in the morning and not noticed, that's how aware I am in
the A.M., but I don't think so.) In the morning we stayed on Rte 99;
much more interesting scenery so I felt less like slitting my
wrists. Temperatures stayed mild---I think the temp sign north of
Sacramento said only 95 degrees. We were back on I-5 after
Sacramento and running fast. By just shy of 6:00pm we were pulling
into the campground at Mt Shasta City. I have never seen Lake Shasta
as low as it was when we went past---it was spooky. We had decided
that after Shasta it was run for home, that's what we did Sunday. No
camp to make, no tent to pitch, leave the clean-up for the morning.
By my calculations, from the time I left, until we rolled into the
driveway, the bike and I covered 6759 miles in 34 days. I'm almost
back to normal, but still feel like taking a nap every couple
hours---maybe that is normal?? [pictures on the web site]

Good to hear your travels are going well....
Rick and I are doing well too. We just took a short trip this past
Sat-Sun up Hwy 20 across the N. Cascades. What a beautiful and fun
ride! We took off Sat and met up with our friend Bill in Marysville.
Continued N. up hwy 9 to Sedro Wooley and hit 20 there. The weather
was absolutely gorgeous! Mid 80's and perfect riding weather. We
meandered up and over playing in the twisties. I let the guys run,
while I kept at my own pace. This was the first major ride I've done
with my new bike and I just had to take it slow until I felt at one
with it....ya know? I found my groove and away I went, even got to
be lead dog once coming down the other side....it was really a
terrific ride! We hit Winthrop and camped at the KOA. It was nice
and peaceful but got really cold!!!! Good thing I had a snuggle
buddy! We ate breakfast and headed back. We decided that we had such
a good ride over, that we'd go back the same route. The weather
forecast was for showers on Sunday after noon, so we thought we
could beat the brunt of them home.....what a joke....traffic was so
slow with summertime lookie-loos up the pass and at Diablo, we were
held captive.....the twisties weren't so fun at 35 mph. We started
to notice a few sputters of rain up high, but then they went away as
we came down.....good thing. Just west of Newhalem the sputters
turned to full fledged drops and visibility decreased considerably.
We kept trudging our way, thinking of I5 and how crappy that portion
would be. It was. Gridlock, bumper to bumper all the way south of Mt
Vernon. It finally opened up to Smokey Pt. and then wham, we stopped
again. We were finally at a place where we could exit and take the
side streets back to Bill's.....sopping wet, we were.....3 hrs. from
Marblemount to Marysville.....that was the most miserable ride I've
ever done.....Bill graciously allowed us to park our bikes in his
garage and take his truck home.....that's what friends are for!!!!&n
bsp; We finnaly got home about 7:30 pm....cold and tired and
hungry.....but safe and sound. So, that was my tale of the two
extremes.....so far the best and the worst of Summer 08.
May you and Marjorie continue to have safe travels too.....I keep up
with your blog as you go....
Peace be with you both.

Hey guys---Greetings from San Diego,
California.
Let's take care of some administrative details first---if you
haven't picked up this months copy of Thunder Press yet, run don't
walk to your nearest outlet. There you'll find a picture of Brer
Squirrel riding the bull as it comes off the truck. You'll also find
an article about the Centralia Vintage Motorcycle Show & Swap and a
picture of my loving grandson (Noah).
Check out
www.bikerinformationguide.com and Ken the turtle's knees in the
breeze thing---he makes nice to yours truly with a mention and a web
site reference. If you're not subscribing you should be.
As long as we're making nice and making references, remember that
this letter is reprinted at
www.bikerfriendlybar.com
by Dutch the Dragoni, so make sure that's one of your regular stops
as you're surfing around.
When we last conversed we were in Gallup, New Mexico cold, wet,
tired and grumpy (sounds like the Readers Digest version of Snow
White and the dwarves) after getting rained out in Santa Fe. A night
in a Kamping Kabin (Sunday) at least got us drier. In the morning it
was saddle up and Westward Ho! Off to Arizona we go!
Monday was a mixed bag riding day with much of the ride forcing us
back onto I-40 where we bucked a fairly strong head wind. But, the
two lane riding was nice. Two stops on the way of note were--
1) Winona (don't forget Winona) where we set up a Photo op on a
closed bridge. I wheeled the motorcycle and trailer onto the bridge
behind the road closed sign. Then turned around to see a cop sitting
by the side of the road about fifty yards off. Well, my intent had
been to just ride the bike off the other side of the bridge, but
with the cop sitting there watching (and probably laughing himself
sick) I tried to back it out. At one point he took off, I thought
"Ah ha, now's my chance", he turned around and came back. He pulled
into a private drive among a bunch of other cars. I figured to Hell
with it and undid the Jack Knifed trailer and put it all back
together again so I could drive back out the way I drove in.
And
2)Winslow---as in--standing on the corner in Winslow, Arizona--such
a fine sight to see--there's a girl my Lord in a flatbed Ford--slowin'
down to take a look at me. That "Take it Easy" thing by the Eagles.
Winslow has taken this to heart and has established a four square
block with a statue, a mural and a real live flatbed Ford parked on
the street. There's Eagles' music piped onto the street and a steady
stream of visitors from all over the World. It was good to see
someplace take a grasp on its future and go for it---I wish them
luck.
From there it was a smooth run into Flagstaff and our camp spot for
the night.
We got in with enough time to make a little side trip (just what I
want a little motorcycle ride after how many days in the saddle?) to
Sedona. It had been recommended to us that we do the Oak Creek
Overlook (route 89A south out of Flagstaff---get your little mappies
out) and then ride the road into Sedona. I really wish I was a
better photographer so that I could portray how awesome this route
is. Got some pictures from the Overlook---but there are other rock
formations that are just killer---if you get the chance to do this
one don't pass it up. If you put Big Sur together with Kona Town in
Hawaii and drop it in the painted desert, that's Oak Creek to
Sedona.
The next morning the road to Kingman was smooth and fast. We had
been in touch with friend Speed who was heading to Austin and hoped
that our paths would cross in Kingman. Again, we were forced onto
the freeway by the route and it ran fast. We were back on the two
lane in time to stop in Seligman for breakfast at the "Roadkill
Cafe"--big portions, good price, nice ambiance, great t-shirt. From
there it was excellent two lane all the way to Kingman, we got in an
hour sooner than we expected---so no Speed. Hope your travels were
good Dude---catch you on the rebound.
From Kingman we took the Oatman Highway to California. Now you need
to remember that I pull this pop-up camp trailer with this Heritage
Springer; far as I'm concerned not a problem as long as the road
isn't too radical. The Oatman Highway west out of Kingman
is RADICAL. The twisties could make a grown man cry. All I could
think about the whole time is how did someone in a 1940's land boat
ever negotiate this road and survive? I think it's necessary to do
this road at least once, but don't pull a trailer while you do it.
Needles for the night and California here we come.
In the morning we got some of the best and some of the worst two
lane of the trip. We should have taken advice and topped off coming
out of Needles, with only one station in between Needles and Ludlow.
That one station in Fenner at this date is charging $6.00 per gallon
and feeling self-righteous about it. Don't stop there.
In 1974 my brother, Bert, and I came through this way in July. We
had spent the hot part of the day at a park in Needles near the
water. As the day began to cool we headed west on I-40, jumping off
to try to find gas in Essex and escape the heat of a crowded Sunday
night freeway. The people at a little broken down service station
told us to stay on the "Old Highway", the ride would be nicer and we
wouldn't have to deal with the traffic. As the day dimmed, Bert and
I jammed through the cooling desert, eventually emerging back to the
freeway at Ludlow. We followed that route again this week in the day
light. The little station at Essex is still there, but shuttered,
there are people at Amboy trying to make a comeback. The station we
eventually stopped at in Ludlow is shuttered, but the Cafe still
serves a great breakfast. The two lane west of Ludlow is some of the
worst I've ever been on, avoid it. We were eventually doing
twenty-five and trying to figure how to go cross country to the
freeway when we found an obscure exit. It was freeway to Barstow, a
short two lane to Victorville and freeway into the Los Angeles
Basin.
It was off the freeway at San Bernardino to Foothill Boulevard.
Through Rialto, Fontana, Rancho Cucamonga and Claremont to Pomona
and our camp spot. Now I have to take a moment to talk about the
facilities we've been using on our cross country trek. For the most
part we've been using KOA and have been very happy. I know it's not
real camping but it's not costing us an arm and a leg every time we
turn around. It has allowed us to schedule our jumps in a
comfortable manner, knowing there was a consistency we would find at
each stop. At Pomona we were told that we could not use a tent site,
so were charged for an RV site. When we tried to stay an extra day
so we could leave the trailer and not have to drag it through
Metropolitan LaLa Land with us--our fees increased by 50%. We're
having the same troubles in San Diego.
So instead of finishing the trip we packed up and moved over with
relatives in Claremont. They have both been ill, so we wanted to
burden them as little as possible (how could I be a burden you
ask?---you haven't known me all that long have you?) So we made the
move and took care of the other types of things that needed taking
care of.
I needed to change the oil on the bike, so we dropped over to Pomona
Valley HD in Montclair. We went into service and asked if they had
some corner where a road weary traveler could change his oil. They
asked what language I was speaking and for $80-$90 they could change
it for me--and that included parts and labor---we didn't even get to
talk about scheduling---I said I was speaking Norwegian and didn't
understand---Danke.
So we cruised around until we found a little furriner who owned a
repair shop and stopped and asked him. He said move your bike around
into the shade---need a drain pan?---here's an oil rag--no, no keep
it---no, no I couldn't take anything. So, to find customer service
in this country---you got to find a furriner. If you happen to run
across Zabi at Foothill Automotive or want to drop him a line at 377
Foothill Blvd., Pomona, Ca 91767---tell him Irish sent you (as a
favor to me.)
Friday we finished. Down Foothills Boulevard, through Glendora,
Azusa, Irwindale and Pasadena to Colorado St. Through Eagle Rock to
Figueroa and Sunset Boulevard. On Sunset Boulevard to Santa Monica
Boulevard through Hollywood, Beverly Hills, Los Angeles and finally
Santa Monica itself and Ocean Avenue. A quick look at Palisades Park
and a back track to the official end of route 66 at the intersection
of Lincoln blvd and Olympic Blvd---nothing of interest. As with much
of the road, there is sometimes little you can point to as
definitive---we choose to have the end be Santa Monica Blvd and
Ocean Ave, just a little more romantic.
All of the pictures from this portion of the trip have been sent to
the web site---if you haven't checked lately there's a lot to see.
Brer Squirrel is talkin' about meeting us part way home (Mt
Shasta??) That would be next week-end. You can get in touch with him
at bcbiker@comcast.net if
you fancy a ride---I think it would be very cool.
Business now for a few days, then home again, home again---when you
see the Tra-la-la you'll know we're home safe.
Enough for now. This is Irish giving you the low five on the Hi way.

Hey Guys---Greetings from Gallup, New
Mexico---We're drip drying after waking up in the rain in Santa
Fe---but I skip ahead. When last we spoke we were in Springfield,
Missouri. In Springfield we acquired "EZ 66 Guide for Travelers" by
Jerry McClanahan, and have shifted our allegiance to this book as
our travel reference of choice. It's a flip book that is much easier
to handle on the bike and gives directions that are useable in
either a west bound or east bound direction. Anyway---we left
Springfield, again trying as much as possible to follow the original
road. There was more than one alignment for the road, so many times
there is more than one route that can be followed. On the way to
Joplin we took a hint from the book and stopped at the Pancake Hut
in Carthage---what a breakfast. From Carthage it was a short jump to
Joplin. This is where you deviate from following the current path of
I-44, in order to catch the thirteen miles of Route 66 that lie
within the state of Kansas. The road into Kansas is rough---it may
be original road. You come around a corner into Galena and see "4
Women on the Route", a restored service station and big plans for
the restoration of other buildings to reflect Galena's pride in
being part of the Route 66 history. If you stop you may be greeted
by Melba (but call her Cricket and tell her Irish told you to).
Cricket chirps non-stop with enthusiasm for the proposed changes and
the programs that have already been put in place
[www.4womenontheroute.com]. Most of the rest of the Route in Kansas
seems to be under construction and hard to follow. So comes
Oklahoma. In Oklahoma you can drive on Mickey Mantle Boulevard---we
did. Again we got caught late in the day and not making enough time,
so we ended up getting caught on one of their Turnpikes---not
something I would recomend as a good time. One of our most
interesting events happened on the freeway in Oklahoma City. We have
been trying to bypass the big cities in favor of the small towns, in
order to do this we will jump on the nearest freeway through the
city. While we were doing this in Oklahoma City, a guy on a Kowasaki
went by and aknowledged. Next thing I know he is back beside us with
something in his hand. (The last time something like this happened,
I was going to New Orleans from Keesler AFB with a friend when we
began bandying back and forth with a couple of guys driving next to
us. The upshot is, that day I traded some fruit of the vine for a
pinch of the herb. It happens when you least expect it.) We camped
that night at the Cherokee Trading Post west of Oklahoma City in El
Reno. The next day we visited the National Route 66 Museum in Elk
City and finished Oklahoma. Then came Texas and our first encounter
with the rain of the south. Just shy of Amarillo we got hit by a
gulley washer. Just manageing to get off the freeway we hole up at a
little hole in the wall convience store. Another couple was there on
bikes with a lap top watching the weather. We watched the weather
too as it hailed, thundered and knocked the power out. We finally
got a break and hit the road, missing the exit for our camp spot and
finally settling for a motel in Wildorado (who's claim to fame is if
you've seen Wildorado you've smelt it). No Wi-Fi at the motel. In
the morning we treked into Adrian for breakfast at the Mid-Point
Cafe---worth the stop. That ended Texas. Next New Mexico. We decided
to take the pre-1937 alignment and I had hoped to write this letter
from Santa Fe. We had decided to stay an extra day to explore. Those
hopes were dashed with the pitter patter of little rain drops on the
roof. We spent the day riding in the rain to get out of the rain.
The rain here is different from home, you can see it coming and it
doesn't caress you, it hammers. So we drip dry in Gallup. I
shouldn't do these types of trips it gets me to thinking. My thought
process this time concerns---journey and destination. We who ride
speak a lot about it being the journey not the destination, that the
destination is mearly the excuse for the journey. Well I contend
that a destination is definable whereas a journey is not. You can
say here I am at my destination---it's defined. A journey may have
many definations or none. On this journey I have experienced both
freeway travel and two lane blacktop. Given the choice I think,
given the time and the ability, I'll take the two lane whenever
possible. Have you ever ridden down a frontage road and be doing
almost the same speed as those on the freeway, but not have to deal
with the trucks or the idiots? Have you ever taken a business loop
through a small town and seen the part of America that died when
America got efficient? We could get real esoteric about this and
talk about this journey of life and the destination everyone gets
to---no one here gets out alive. Thoughts? A happy birthday to my
friend Woj--today you are a man---what ya' want ta' be when you grow
up? Oh---I'm tired.
This is IRISH giving you the low five from the hi way.

Hey Guys---Greetings from Springfield
Missouri
Monday (8/25) we rode up to Chicago. We had set camp in Kankakee
Illinois so that we wouldn't have to ride into Chicago with the
trailer. I called my friend Woj, who when last heard from had moved
to Chicago. He's now in Boston. No hookup but a nice conversation
and good references for places to stop in the Windy City.
Unfortunately once we started riding that snake called 66, there
wasn't much time for side trips.
We are using Tom Snyder's "Route 66 Traveler's Guide and Roadside
Companion" as our main resource and acquiring others as we run
across them. For our purposes we considered the Corner of Jackson
Boulevard and Michigan Avenue one block west of Grant Park to be the
starting point of The Road. Since Jackson is now one way the wrong
direction, we jogged one block east to Adams, and our journey began.
We are trying to follow the original road as best we can
determine---sometimes by guess and by golly.
By the time we reached Joliet, we were somewhat parched. Feeling
that a refreshing beverage and toast to Elwood and "Joliet" Jake was
in order we pulled into a likely looking establishment. There we met
two new best friends Wayne and bartendress extraordinaire Tiffany.
After slaking our thirst with more than one quenchie, we continued
south. After a quick stop at the Launching Pad Drive-In for a burger
and chat with the Gemini Giant, we eventually reached Dwight and
turned east to return to camp in Kankakee.
Tuesday morning we again returned to Dwight for breakfast at a 66
themed cafe and a photo op across the street with an original Texaco
station. Off we went again in a South westerly direction. This is
very much like a scavenger hunt---not only are we trying to find as
much of the original path of the road as we can, but we are also
trying to find some of the items mentioned in our reference manual.
Many of those references are no longer there, or are off the beaten
track. We have some time, but we still have to get somewhere.
When we got near St Louis, we jumped on I-55 and segued onto I-44,
it was rush hour and late in the day. Trying to take surface roads
through St Louis was not a pretty thought. We found our camp spot,
went off to have a nice dinner (and a refreshing beverage or two--I
forget), got a nice shower and beddy bye. Awaking in the middle of
the night to an agonizing itching of the feet (see "The Road to
Misery" from this time last year); Missouri had bitten me again.
In the morning, we find that Missouri does not sign its routes as
well as Illinois. We end up backtracking quite often. At Waynesville
we make the decision to again jump on the interstate, so we can end
up with some legitimate mileage for the day. Here we sit in
Springfield, after a nice dip in the pool, battling the flies.
Tomorrow we will try to make Joplin (this had been our goal for
today), make a quick incursion into Kansas and end the day somewhere
in Oklahoma.
There are photos on the web site and I'll continue to update the
photos even if I don't compose---so check often.
If Ya' want me ta' know somethin' Ya' got ta' tell me.

Hey Guys---Greetings from Kankakee
Illinois.
We left Minneapolis Saturday afternoon, it took us most of the day
to get everything packed up after being set up for a week. It's
amazing how fast you can get spread out. Marjorie had flown out so
her stuff hadn't been on the bike yet---all got worked out.
I'm a firm believer in the three day rule (fish and relatives should
be out of the house in three days--or in the freezer or things start
to stink). Well we had gone well beyond our three days and I wasn't
about to move to the freezer; it was only a matter of time before
someone said or did something wrong. Since mother and son were doing
well it behooved us to make a move.
We made Saturday a short travel day and landed in a KOA in Hixton
Wisconsin. Nice little place, well kept. Sunday we put on about 360
miles to Kankakee. The plan at this point is to travel up north to
Chicago tomorrow and find the northern terminus of Route 66. This
way we can leave camp set and not have to travel in the city with
the trailer. We'll come back her sometime tomorrow and get rested up
to continue our journey on Tuesday.
I'll stay in touch as time and availability permit.
If ya' want me ta' know something ya' got ta' tell me.

Hey guys---Most important news first; born
just after noon today central time---Declan Se Souster, the newest
grandchild. At just shy of 10lbs, he's a handful. [pictures on the
web site] When last we spoke---the grandson (Noah) and I were
ensconced in the Prairie Motel in Lemmon South Dakota, after riding
half the day in the rain. We got a good meal, a good shower and a
good nights sleep after catching up on the Olympics. The next
morning the decision was made to try and ride it in to Minneapolis.
That grandson is one Hell of a slave driver. We saddled up, pulled
out of the muddy parking lot and headed East. At approximately
7:30pm central time we pulled in front of the Souster home.
[pictures on the web site] Don't know how long we'll hang here, but
I'll use the time to research the next leg of the journey. I've
signed up for an IRS seminar in San Diego. Being this far East it
seems only right to find the Mother Road and follow her to So Cal.
The seminar is 9/9,10,11, so that is when we have to be in the San
Diego area. Probably head north the next week-end. Anyone want to
hook up about Shasta and ride it in?
I'll try and stay in touch as things develop, and we'll see what happens.
If ya want me ta' know somthin' ya got ta' tell me.

Hey Guys---Greetings from Lemmon, South
Dakota
After three days of hard riding, this morning about three hundred
miles in the rain, the grandson (Noah) and I have decided to treat
ourselves. We're here at the Prairie Motel in Lemmon (everyone grab
your official maps issued as you entered the room),find Lemmon in
the upper northwest corner of South Dakota on route 12.
We left early Tuesday, with the obligatory breakfast at the famous
Ken's Truck Stop. The run across washington was pretty uneventful,
but soon after entering Idaho (and it would have to be soon, as
Idaho at that point is only 75 miles wide) I lost a screw from the
bezel in my head light. Now besides the point that a screw is always
a bad thing to lose under any circumstances, "bezel" seems like such
an important word. Like maybe, the ruler of something instead of
just the round thing that holds your headlight in the housing.
Anyway, as luck would have it I was the next exit away from the new
Lone Wolf HD in Cor d'Alene. They haven't quite got it figured
out, they jumped to help and only charged a buck for a replacement
screw--now a replacement screw is never quite as good as the one you
should have, but as CSN say, love the one you're with.
We made it into Missoula in time to get a camp spot at the local KOA
before dark. In the morning, after a short stint on I-90, we jumped
off on route 12. Through some mountain passes and the state capital
of Helena, we did some two lane over the road ridding. At least in
the middle of the week this road is sparsely traveled and it was
just the three of us (the heritage, the boy and me) with the road,
the scenery and the boy's gameboy. By evening we were in Forsyth at
another campground. We were awoken that by the pitter/patter of rain
drops on the roof.
We were dry until breakfast, but left the restaurant in the rain.
Exit Montana, cut through North Dakota and into South Dakota. The
decision was then made---catch an early day. So, when life gives you
Lemmon, check into the motel.
Don't forget Brotherfest---That's this week-end---right Bonz?
More to come, but for now

Hey Guys---I thought time was natures way
of keeping everything from happening at once.
I looked back and found it's been three weeks since we spoke. It's
not from lack of things happening. This will be very short, things
are still going at break-neck speed. The Grandson (Noah) is
currently with us. I drop the Ol' Lady off at the airport to fly out
to Minnesota, she's trying to see if she can beat the stork to the
daughter's. Third grand child will be born any minute.
Tomorrow Noah and I will head out on the motorcycle. We're not
trying to beat anyone. Did I mention the boy is eleven? One of those
once in a lifetime adventures---hope its a good one.
Got the oldest boy-child married off this last weekend---seemed like
nothing was going to work right at one point---then everything
worked like it was supposed to. We inherit a new almost three year
old granddaughter from the event---we'll see how that works.
With all the family stuff going on, I still managed to get to the
Centralia Vintage Show & Swap. The grandson and I went down on
Saturday and spent the night. When we left to go down, he was still
not sure he wanted to travel cross country on a motorcycle with
Grandpa. By the end of the week-end we had worked things
out---Yee-Haw.
Lots of familiar faces in Centralia---Dutch from Biker Friendly Bar
(you can find this e-mail reprinted on www.BikerFriendlyBar.com),
Turtle Ken from Biker Information Guide (Find the Gotcha section of
the www.BikerInformationGuide.com and look for familiar faces, its
become a new pastime), Diane d'Patch Lady (I showed at Destination
last Saturday, You weren't there Diane--hope you're OK) Jimmy the
Troll and Jerrilee (sorry we didn't get together to say goodbye).
And some new friends---got a chance to sit with Lowrider, Rick and
Mark, the movers and shakers of the show. Nice people, Nice
event--put it on your calendar for next year. [pictures on the web
site]
Once we get done with whatever the Hell we're doing in Minneapolis,
we're heading for San Diego where I hope to attend a seminar. I
think we have enough time so---we're gonna try Rte 66. I'm taking
the little lap top, so I'll try to stay in touch. The business phone
number (206)299-0375 forwards directly to E-mail---so if ya got
somethin' ta say--there's your chance.
David (as in Ottey) thank you for having us down for your yearly
party. It was good to see you and some of the family. We'll have to
do it again in a decade or so.
Said this was going to be short. If Ya' want me ta know somethin' Ya'
gotta tell me.

Hey Guys---Busy week--seemed like
everything in the world happened this week. To start off, I'd like
to welcome the newest member of the family--Jolianna "Rebel" Simone
Till--born 7/16/08 to Rainy Waterman---somewhere in Grapevine, Texas
(but we won't hold that against her). Rebel was 8lbs 3ozs and 21.5"
tall (as they say for Texans). Rainy is a long time friend and has
been receiving this E-mail almost from the beginning. Rainy--send
pictures I can post so we can share the kid. Oh, so much to tell, so
little time. Last Thursday, we headed out to Cumberland, for a Taco,
some Jams and sunshine. We hooked up with Sean (of BillyBike fame),
Mike and Sherry. Sean managed to pick the absolute best ride to
avoid the traffic tie ups and it turned out to be a very nice ride
indeed. We grabbed the HOV lane on HWY 99 out of Des Moines, rode it
all the way south to 272nd and then followed 272nd and its
permutations to Kent-Kangley Road. A Quick jaunt east on Kent-Kangley,
then off at 252nd (?) [The turn at the Shell station after 248th].
South again to Black Diamond and onto the road to the one way
bridge. The quick switch back after the bridge takes you straight
into Cumberland---sort of (nice twisties--if you know what I mean.)
At the City Hall Saloon in Cumberland, things were just getting
cranked up. Our friends Sam the Howler and Nessie had some nice "for
sales" spread out. I took some pictures of Sam's stuff and you can
get an idea of what she does at the web site. Ran into old friend
Chris and snuck a profile picture of him---we haven't crossed paths
since we tried to continue the Pioneer Square/Hood Canal ride, a
number of years ago. Steve Bartel is trying to revive his Shovel
Head and had it out that night. As with many Vintage bikes, there
were phone calls made later that night, but he managed to get things
fired up again and got home. [photos on the web site] On Friday we
packed up the tent and trailer and turned south. We were headed
toward Napavine and the Down Rider Foundation benefit at the
Napavine Amphitheater. Now-a-days it doesn't seem to matter which
direction you head or what time of day, something's gonna stall you.
After zigzagging through stalls to get out of the Metropolitan area,
we finally managed to break loose somewhere south of Tacoma. We
found Napavine and the Ace Hardware where we could pick up tickets
for five dollars more than the web site said. We talked to a guy
about camping in the park next to the Amphitheater. He gave us
directions, said find a pick-a-nick table and set your camp. We
found a perfect spot near a port-a-potty (the only conveniences). He
later came and told us that that was kinda reserved for the people
bringing their kids in to play in a baseball tournament, so could we
move? and Oh, by the way did anyone say anything about the
twenty-five dollar cost to camp?---on a bike you get used to it.
There was supposed to be a pre-party at a place called the
Kickstand. After finally getting camp set, we found some dinner and
did a little exploring. We found the Kickstand, but figured we were
still a little early---no bikes in the parking lot. Back to the
campground for a soft drink and a power nap---in between trains. Did
I tell you about the train tracks through the middle of town?
Anyway, back to the Kickstand for a Kickass party. There was at
least a bike in the parking lot---we made it two. After a couple of
refreshing beverages, the revelry was almost too much to handle and
it was getting close to gates opening at the venue, so back to camp.
We had failed to notice another bike arrive in the parking lot. Back
at camp, we could see the parking lot, we watched the fifteen or
twenty bikes pour in (well to be honest, at least two of those came
off a trailer). At the gate, we were told there was no re-entry once
the music started, so if I got cold I couldn't go get my coat. The
venue was a giant gravel parking lot with chain link fence around
it, VIP covered seating around the sides. There was a cattle pen
beer garden to the rear and the promised venders consisted of a
t-shirt booth and dog and burger stand. There were port-a-potties as
facilities though. The opening act was a group of local kids called
"Out of Order", to warm up the group of kids in the audience. By the
time the headliners "Hell's Belles" took the stage, there was a nice
line of backs in front of where we had set our chairs, so while we
couldn't see very well, we could still get blown out of our chairs.
The band is good at what they do and in a different situation, would
probably be a lot of fun. But after about half the set, we'd had
enough.
At camp the sound was about perfect. We had a couple refreshing
beverages, without having to stand in a cattle pen, and listened to
the rest of the show. We then crawled into the pop-up for a nice
sleep with train whistles every hour on the hour. Did I tell you
about the train tracks through the middle of town? In the morning,
pack up, hook up and head for breakfast and a quick stop by the
store on south 56th & 'M' in Tacoma (Tacoma V-Twin) to see friend
Ernie.
Now reading back over this it doesn't seem like I've expressed a lot
of enthusiasm here, but nothing could be farther from the truth. I
think I may have learned something and that is always exciting.
Here's the deal; this was a fundraiser for a motorcycle cause, yet
it didn't seem like there were a whole lot of bikers there. Now the
question is, why is that exciting? Because there are many times that
I feel that we preach to the choir; I ride motorcycle, I know the
problems, the dangers and the repercussions. How do we share the
issues of our life style? How do we present things that are
important to us (and by extension to the public in general) to those
not involved in the life style? I haven't seen it done at Poker
Runs, nor at Freedom Runs, not at openers or rallies. But I did see
it happen in a small way at the Down Riders Foundation Benefit.
Think about the opportunity to preach not only to the choir, but the
sinners as well. Think about the opportunity to have others support
some of our needs, as we so givingly support other's needs. Think
about it.
Back home it was unpack what needed to be unpacked, stow the
trailer, grab a soft drink and a power nap, and saddle back up for a
ride back down to Tacoma. We had been invited to a wedding at the
Point Defiance Zoo. A leisurely ride down and a jam back in the moon
light finished our day at about 10:30pm.
Up in the morning for a ride to Gig Harbor to support the Lost
Squadron and their Forgotten Veterans Run. Last year I took the
Ferry to the west side and got screwed up by a change in schedule.
This year we figured we'd ride around. Who would be out early Sunday
morning? The answer: everyone. In Gig Harbor the ride shaped up to
150 bikes instead of the 40 the year before. It was good to see Ken
Olson from Biker Information Guide. If you're not receiving their
stuff, go to www.bikerinformationguide.com and sign up for it. Ken
does a little thing called "Gotcha" where you can find yourself
imortalized on line in pictures---wish I'd a thought of that.
John Towers from the Lost Squadron ramrods this show and did a good
job of pre-ride orientation. This was no "play a game" ride, it was
onto the freeway and away we go. The ride went from Gig Harbor to
Port Gamble, a loop through town and head back down to Silverdale.
No stops until we were at Legend HD in Silverdale. Steve Bartel and
his friend Shelly showed in Gig Harbor, so at least we had someone
we knew to wind our way through the madding crowd on the freeway. By
the time we got to Silverdale the pack was pretty much back
together. At Silverdale it was music by Knucklehead, burgers and
dogs on the Bar-bee, but no rest for the wicked. We cut out shortly
after arrival so we could get back on the east side of the Sound.
It was about 1:00pm when we left Legend. After a mis-direction into
Bremerton to find they didn't have a ferry leaving until 3:00pm, we
hot footed it to Bainbridge to catch a 2:05pm boat by moments. The
object was to catch a piece of "Messy Burgers, Bikers and Babes" at
the Tripple X Drive In in Issaquah. We rolled in just as the last
band of the day was firing up. A huge Root Beer Float and a giant
burger in a nostalgia packed Drive In was a great way to end the
day. Friends Gary and Bonnie Boop showed up for the ride home
through Ravensdale and Maple Valley. Home again, home again tra la
la. [pictures on the web site]

Hey Guys---it was kinda like last week
disappeared. I have to apologize to Rat City ABATE, I had the date
of the meeting written down and had it in my mind, then just missed
it. I kept thinking it's next Tuesday until it was Thursday and went
"Oh Shit!!" Anyway, sorry, I'll try to do better in the future.
[Meetings, second Tuesday of the month at the Emerald Green
Restaurant---across from Downtown HD in Tukwila.]
My friend Ernie from Tacoma went with us on the Crystal Mountain
Coast on the Fourth, and lost his silver Sturgis 2000 ring. If you
were on the ride and found a Sturgis 2000 ring, I know you are
desperate to find the owner. If you contact me I can help you return
the ring to its' owner. This is the ring Ernie bought when he and I
went to Sturgis together and has much sentimental value. On the
other hand, if you like it enough, I'm sure he'd sell it to you. No
joke---anybody seen the ring?
Speaking of the Coast---we ended up with twenty-five bikes. On a day
that was grey to start with and damp on the dash to the top, I count
that as a success. We wandered from here (the Barrel) to Puyallup
picking up bikes as we went. In Puyallup Sam the Howler presented us
with a bottle of Champagne she had decorated herself [see the
picture on the web site under "Crystal Coast 08"]. Quite the nice
present---thanks Sam. The Rebels hooked up with us there [did you
see your picture in the lastest "Thunder Press" Jay?---Mailman is in
the same picture Helen], as did Uncle Buck, Spinner and friends. In
Enumclaw the last of the contingent joined up, including a handful
of Apples.
It seemed as soon as we left the parking lot of the Crystal Bistro
the rain started. It stayed with us most of the way to the turn off
to Crystal Mountain. No one dropped out. Getting up to the Ski
Resort was like riding right into the ceiling of the world itself.
It was like there was a wet fog around us. At the top, I found the
hot air hand warmers in the restrooms---nice. We toasted then
coasted.
Even with the weather not quite with us, everyone seemed to enjoy
themselves. [Pictures on the web site]
Been hitting Taco Thursday at the Alki---ran into the Sherminator
this last week. With a swing by the Last Chance on the way home, it
becomes a nice Thursday evening.
My understanding is that Sam the Howler and Nessy will be setting up
in Cumberland at the City Hall Saloon to sell their wares, this
coming Thursday. If you have the inclination give them a
visit---bring money---spend it---the economy needs your help.
Next Month my son Geoff is getting married. There's all sorts of
craziness going on around that. Their doing an 8/8/08 thing. Some
sort of a numerology meets cosmic occlusion event or something. All
too complicated for my simple mind. Anyway the eldest grandson [Noah
eleven years of age from the far away metropolis of Minneapolis]
will be in town. Once things around the wedding are done, he and I
will put the Ol' Lady on a jet plane for the far away metropolis of
Minneapolis and then we'll take the bike to the far away metropolis
of Minneapolis. His mom [my daughter Erin] is expecting her third
son later in the month. So, it seems like everything in the world is
happening in August. I got the new tablet [laptop] and will take it
along so I can document and send postcards---wish me luck.
The Gimp led the Gramma Run this last weekend---got a call from him
Saturday evening as they were setting camp, got me jealous. I had to
cover Tacoma V-Twin so Ernie could go to Do Wa Diddy. I need a
report on the Gramma Run guys.

Hey Guys---last chance to dance.
This is a last minute note on the Crystal Mountain Coast. We plan to
take off from the Barrel at 9:00am and do a quick swing through Des
Moines to pick up anyone waiting at the Yardarm. Next pick-up point
will be Johnny's Bar and Grill in the parking lot behind Fred Meyers
in Puyallup (down by the river---you know the rest). From there to
the Crystal Bistro in Enumclaw, via devious ways taught to me by an
old Indian I once knew (you do have Native American blood don't you
Gimp?). I don't expect either the Yardarm or Johnny's to be open,
but in the case of Johnny's the Fred Meyer is there and available
for beverage acquisition or deposit. The Crystal Bistro has assured
us they will be open---but, believe it or not, I have been lied to
before. From the Crystal it's a dash to Crystal---please be gassed
up.
After the Coast it's to the Natches and a dog and refreshing
beverage. From there it's on to whatever cranks you up for the
Fourth. Everyone is welcome---but bikes coast, cages watch.
Gonna try and get to Cumberland this evening for a quick hit and run
to see Sam the Howler and whatever she may display. Kinda depends on
the Thunder Boomies that are going on.
Said this was going to be short.

would like all to think about this years elections and our planning
for this next years legislative efforts. I hear many times that we
do not get anywhere with our efforts, but just because we may fall a
little short of success does not mean we should give up. Where would
we be today if our predecessors gave up. This great nation was
founded on the principle of individual freedom and we should never
begin surrendering those freedoms. To do so would tarnish the memory
of those who went before us and made the ultimate sacrifice for that
freedom. We should defend their efforts with every breath we take.
Freedom is not and never was free. With that being said, think about

Hey Guys----Some house keeping today.
Have been sticking fairly close to home over the last couple of
weeks. Trying to get those things done that need to get done so we
can attend to those things that make life worth living. Have done
Taco Thursday for the last two Thursdays and have started stopping
by the Last Chance, a joint on first ave just a couple blocks north
of the first avenue south bridge. Looks like the kind of place that
can be some fun. Stop by and check it.
Last Saturday watched two friends (Becky and Rick) tie the knot down
at Salt Water State Park. My father used to take us kids there when
I was six or seven. The ball team I was on when I was ten had a
perfect season and the coaches took us there to celebrate. Anyway,
the setting has deep meaning for me, so the ceremony meant just a
little more. Officiating was my friend Jayne, thought she did a
great job (anyone looking to make it official or knowing someone
looking to make it official, I can turn you on to a great marrying
Jayne.)
Rick and Becky asked me to record the proceedings in pictures
(scared the Bejeezus out of me) so needless to say---[pictures on
the web site]---Becky says don't look at the one of her signing
documents---so skip that one OK?
After the ceremony Marjorie and I headed south to the Gimp and
Ruufie's place. They were having a party to celebrate the graduation
of one of their children from High School---that in itself is a
reason to celebrate. But, along with that the Gimp slipped in an
early nod to Ruufie's, ends in a zero, upcoming birthday. Boy was
she surprised. They provided a great spread, kinda wish I hadn't
eaten at the wedding---no I don't.
OK, the word you have been waiting breathlessly for---details on the
Crystal Mountain Coast---you can breath now. Figure to leave the
Barrel parking lot at 9:00am 7/4. Gonna do that southern route thing
again. So you Des Moines people---we'll be coming past the Yardarm,
if you are interested in a pick-up there let me know. Second pick-up
point will be in Puyallup---there's a little joint in the same
complex as the Fred Meyer---right there by the bridge. After a short
stop to refresh, figure an 11:00am leave from there and head for
what used to be the Roadhouse in Enumclaw (just heard that it
changed hands and names---anyone know the new name?) Shoot for a
1:30pm leave from Enumclaw---give everyone a chance to gas and grub.
Make sure to bring something appropriate for a toast at the top.
Think about an appropriate toast (something having to do with
twenty-five years might be appropriate.)
Coast at 3:00pm, then to the Greenwater for a dog and a beverage.
Need to remind you that this news letter is being reproduced on
www.bikerfriendlybar.com, thanks Dutch (hope all is well after the
hospital---you really need to stay away from those places.)

Hey
Guys---When last we spoke, I was in Winthrop Washington just getting
ready to find some back roads in the tall timber. Find those roads
we did, and had it been hunting season dinner was around in
abundance. We probably saw as many as two dozen deer. You know that
if you see one there are probably at least three you don't see; kept
us alert and at fairly low speeds.
The roads were somewhat rough, though. Took some pretty good hits
from pot holes. I guess that's what comes from paying more attention
to what's around you and less attention to the road beneath your
feet---so to speak. Anyway, back at Winthrop for a little afternoon
pizza and beverage; come time to leave and my rear tire wasn't as
round as it used to be. Out came my twelve volt compressor and we
shoved in enough air to get us back to camp. (here's where I play a
little do-de- do-do music and flash some colored lights and maybe
spin some things around to get you in the mood to remember who was
there---Donnie and Rachel, Marjorie and me---please refer to the
last E-mail for more information---you do keep them right?) Back at
camp Donnie and I jacked the bike up (everyone carries a jack on
their bike---right?) and pulled the wheel off.
There was a hardware store just around the corner from the camp
ground. (My kind of camping---walking distance to the hardware
store.) We got a couple of large C-clamps and with those and the
tire iron I carry with me, (Everyone caries----oh, never mind.) we
managed to break the tire down. We hadn't been able to find anything
obvious, but I wasn't taking any chances. My rear wheel is a solid
mag from when I ran a side car on the bike, so can be run as a
tubeless. After the last flat tire in the middle of nowhere Idaho on
a Labor Day week-end, I carry an insert that allows me to convert
from tube to tubeless. We pulled the tube, inserted the insert and
refilled the tire with air. We all sat and watched it for a while
then put it back on the bike.
In the morning (Sunday) there was still air in the tire, so we
packed up and left. The ride across the North Cascades Highway was a
thing of beauty. Still lots of snow beside the road and cold, but
the road was good and traffic was light. When I got home I checked
the air in my rear tire and found fifteen pounds. Oh well, I was
thinking it was probably time for a new tire anyway. [pictures on
the web site]
Don't know if I've mentioned it, but I'm back at Tacoma V-Twin on
Mondays for the Summer. That's the little retail after market parts
store in Tacoma owned by my friend Ernie Smith. If you're out and
about and near South 56th and M Street, stop by and chew the fat for
a little bit. You might even want to buy something---it could
happen!
This last week-end brought us the Washington ABATE Spring Opener.
Marjorie and I headed out early Thursday afternoon, hoping to get a
day to do some riding around Toppenish. We were again pulling the
"new" pop-up camping trailer. After last week-end everything seemed
to roll with a little more confidence. It was just us heading up
I-90 looking to take Canyon road into Yakima. Just after we crested
Snoqualmie Pass, there were a bunch of short light metal rods strewn
across three lanes of the Freeway. There was nothing to do but hold
on and ride through. Just as we're exiting this mess the engine of
the bike dies. I manage to pull off the road and out of traffic.
Visual inspection doesn't show anything out of line. A cop pulls up
and asks if we're broke down. Ya' think?
He helps us contact AAA and then heads off. Shortly after that
Squirrel calls to see if we're in Toppenish yet. When he finds out
we're on the side of the road at the Pass, he says he's on his way.
What seems like hours later AAA gets there and I call Squirrel and
divert him to Eastside Harley. He finds out that they close at 6
o'clock and we won't make it. He stands in a door. There is an epic
battle going on when we get to Eastside. Squirrel is in the doorway
fending off four different Harley mechanics in order to keep them
from closing until we get there.
We get the bike and trailer unloaded. Squirrel gives us a ride home.
Twenty-four hours after our initial departure, we are again on the
road---oh!! and there was the little matter of the $460 to fix the
loose wire, change a good battery, swap plugs that had been in for
two months and lube the throttle cables. I was not impressed.
Other than the above the trip over and back was uneventful, the
weather was beautiful and having a chance to party with friends from
all over the state was a gas.
Some parting thoughts about the Opener (caveat: I'm not in
charge---I don't know diddly about how this event is put
together---I don't think I could do the job that the people who put
it together do---it was a great event)
1) bleachers to view silly biker games and entertainment---or
barring that, isn't there an arena? it is a rodeo grounds.
2) water event---ie: mist tent---hay bale swimming pool---slip
and slide---cliff diving (OK maybe not that)
3) drive in movie---maybe as an inducement to get there on Thursday?
How cool would that be, to be able to sit on your bike and watch
"The Wild Ones", "Born Losers" or even "Wild Hogs"?
4) maybe some off-site events? poker run (who can get enough of
those?) orientiering or mystery ride (list of landmarks and
questions to answer) wine tasting tour (I have found that all bikers
don't just drink beer---strange as that may seem)
Just some thoughts. [pictures on the web site]

Sorry that I couldn't
visit yesterday, but I was, ahem, a little busy. We had a great
weekend. We were the only stitchers there. I found out that
some call it "Needle". So I was the only "needle" for the whole
Spring Opener event. That was ok, I needed the work. Don't
know where Mary's Leathers was. Is she ok? We are thankful for
the increase in attendance this year. I had so many new riders
for patches. but our location was sooo much fun. With the big
penis at the party vendor, & the Vibrator bike that the guy gave
the girls rides on til they screamed & laughed. Some didn't
want to get off the bike cause they were getting off on it.
What fun to see everyone having a good time in the best weather
of the year. great one this morning on the way back to my store
from Amigo Camp. Good to see you & thanks for finally
introducing me to your lovely bride. We are still looking for a
wider cargo trailer, no cash but maybe somewhere we can find a
trade for an older wider trailer. Next Saturday is the
Bellingham HD Bike show. If I missed anyone, that is a good
time to catch me. We are back at Destination HD, Fife on the

Greetings from Winthrop,
Washington---we're a little breezy but not wet.
Last week-end was the Freedom Run. I could have asked for a little
more information, but you live with what you get. Didn't have a good
idea what the deal was if you didn't go down to camp the night
before in Kalama. Headed out anyway into the rain down Hwy167.
Stopped at Destination HD to warm up and dry off, then down I-5 to
Olympia. In Olympia I stumbled across Mick Gillispie, the State
ABATE Coordinator, who happened to know where the staging area for
the ride was.
The place was called Gwinwood, a Christian retreat camp, I never
would have found it. We hooked up with two or three other groups,
about 40 bikes in all, and headed back to the Capitol. At the
Capitol the group met with State Representative Jim Dunn on the
steps of the legislative building; no other state officials were
there.
These kinds of events always leave me a little hollow, no
accomplishment you can point at or statement made. Seems like a lot
of preaching to the choir and no one outside of the congregation has
any idea anything has happened. Maybe I'm just one of those "I want
it now" kinda guys and don't understand the big picture or long term
implications. [pictures on the web site]
This last Thursday, we met at Ken's Truck Stop on I-90. There was
Mike and Julie, Donnie and Rachel, Marjorie and I. We were just
commenting on how long it had been since we had been there and it
hadn't been raining, when it started to rain. We rode up and over
the Pass in the rain and had just out run it when we stopped at the
butcher shop in Cle Elum. By the time we were ready to go we were
suiting up in heavier gear. The rain had caught us.
Mike and Julie had had enough and turned back west. The rest of us
turned east. We had intended to ride Bluett Pass, but what with
pulling the new pop-up for the first time we exercised that
discretion thing and went for Vantage. At the gas stop we were again
dry when we pulled in and getting wet at top up. East again. We
turned north at George to Quincy and Wenatchee. North from there,
bypassing Chelan to a left turn up the Methow Valley (say-- met
how?) at Pateros and on to Winthrop.
The intent of this trip was to see a show some friends were doing in
Twisp and touch bases with some friends who live in Pateros. We
accomplished both. Touching bases with Jeff and Ann in the afternoon
and catching Jo Miller and her Burly Roughnecks at the Twisp River
Pub in the evening. Nice joint.
Now we're going to crawl Winthrop awhile and maybe find a back road
or two. [pictures up as soon as I get home]
Spring Opener this next week---probably leave on Thursday
again---anyone interested in hooking up (Mike Campbell are you
listening?)

Hey Guys---May is Damn near done. The
prelims are almost over and we're gearing up for the main events.
Had a quiet Memorial Week-end. Nice ride with some of the Apples and
some others up to Tahoma National Cemetery, to visit Upchuck. It was
his birthday and it seemed appropriate. Whoever planned the ride
couldn't have planned better, the weather was incredible. We started
at the Huckleberry Inn over on Ambaum for breakfast, then off across
the Valley and up the hill from Kent. We wandered a little, but that
was OK---it was a good group to ride with.
When we finally found the cemetery, they were decking out for
Monday. Flags all over the place. We found Chuck, spilled a beverage
in toast and took a moment. After blessing Chuck, we lined the bikes
up to see if we could get some pictures with the flag backgrounds.
Any of you that have seen my photos, know I'm just learning. I spent
twenty years listening in the sound business and to make this
transition to looking is tough. Any-who, we wound our way home and I
think I spent the rest of the day laying in the sun
purring.[pictures on the web site]
Got the invitation for my 40th High School reunion in the mail this
week. Puts everything in perspective. Feels like only yesterday
sometimes, yet a different lifetime ago (or two, or three, or four).
But these folks have no sense of reality---imagine scheduling an
event like this in the middle of August. I expect to be deep in the
Heartland at that point. Well, maybe the 50th will work out.
The Rebels went to Cougar this year instead of their usual Memorial
Week-end at Silver Lake. I'm eager to hear how that worked out.
The Ol' Lady and I spent time putting the new (used) pop-up trailer,
I got from the Gimp, up and down. I'm getting excited to give this
thing a try for real.

This in from Bryon---
Hey Irish--- I enjoy reading your newletters and have actually made
a couple of rides you have mentioned...being from Olympia makes it
difficult to get to all of them. Anyway, the reason I am sending you
this is to see if you know anyone (or can pass this on) going to the
Redwood Run in June. I am leaving (from Olympia) on the morning of
the 11th and heading all the way down the coast to the run. My old
lady and I would love to have some company to ride with, so if
anyone is interested, please pass on my email (hiwayflyer@gmail.com)
or my phone number (360-870-1022). Thanks, hope to see you soon on a
ride...
Thanks!
Bryan

If you or someone you know is looking for a riding companion to the

Hey Guys---Busy week-end. With the
sun coming out, it seems like everyone was on the road.
Let's start with Chicken Friday at the Barrel. Had the Rebels
descend in numbers from both North and South---Hmmm a Rebel from the
North, I'll have to think about that for a bit. Anyway, Gimp and
Ruthie, Uncle Butch and Aunt Lynn, Jaybird and Pam all rolled in for
a warm Friday eve (truly the first of the season I hope, I hope.)
Friend Steve, a sprinkling of Apples (Jimmy the Troll and Jerilee)
the noisy neighbors were there with assorted family and friends
after a ride to Lake Washington and back. As you can see it turned
into quite an evening with the sharing of refreshing beverages and
partaking of fine food.
The next morning was slow---or perhaps it was me? Up early for a
ride South to Join Tacoma ABATE on their semi-annual Tattered Flag
Ride. Jimmy the Troll and Jerilee showed right on time---will
wonders never cease? an Apple on time---I think I just felt the
Universe tilt---not a lot, but I think it did. We headed South down
the middle of the Valley on HWY 167. We were looking for the Hangar
Inn at the Pierce County Airport. Off 167 onto 512 and off again at
Meridian then down to 169th. I expected Meridian to be a mess, but
it wasn't too bad.
At the restaurant, we ate (good food), got filled in on the
expectations for the day and bought into the dice roll portion of
the day. The Tattered Flag is sort of a relic trophy that gets
awarded to the chapter member at the end day with the highest dice
total. Not being chapter members we weren't eligible for the trophy,
but could try for the pot established by the buy in. This ride is
much more casual than the Tacoma Chapter's usual rides; much more
discussion about routes and stops. We actually ended up catching up
to the East Pierce County Chapter's Mystery Ride and tagging after
them. Very nice day in the sun. Have to get used to that sun block
thing again.
South Hill Puyallup to Tenino to Grand Mound (now I know where that
is) to Roy, back to North Puyallup. [pictures on the web site]
Sunday hooked up with Steve Bartel and his friend Shelly. This time
we headed North for Snohomish. Up 99 across the viaduct and cross at
Mercer, catching I-5 just before the ship canal bridge. Steve
rides motorcycle escorts all around the Puget Sound region, so knows
some very neat little tricks to get around. He led us off the
freeway somewhere around Mountlake Terrace to a little hole in a
strip mall breakfast place, then through some nice roads to
Snohomish. That area of the world is growing by leaps and
bounds---new construction everywhere (come to think of it, what part
of the Puget Sound region isn't growing?)
Spent about three hours wandering around the Bike show. Ran into
some more Apples (can't seem to go anywhere without stepping on an
Apple anymore---think they could be stalking me?) Had a quick visit
with Diane d'Patch Lady, seemed to have a good day, even though
Love's Leathers ended up a no show. Ran into Laura Unruh, but am
pretty sure I didn't hurt her. Crossed paths with the Mailman again
and that feisty little Helen Wolfe. Spoke to the Great Dave Eady for
a quick second as he was doing wheelies up Main Street. Couldn't
seem to find hide nor hair of Eddieboy, I think he may just be
phoning it in.
A quick trip back in time to catch a refreshing beverage and a
burger at the Barrel and a few minutes with Gary and Carol.
[pictures on the web site]

Those of you that didn't get the message---this E-mail is now being
reproduced on the Biker Friendly Bar web site---www.bikerfriendlybar.com
as "Irish Speaks"---go check it out---send your friends---send your
enemies, serves 'em right.
.............................................................................
We haven't had a discussion in a while---let's try this and see
where it gets us.
A number of years ago, coming up I-5 through Oregon we stopped at a
rest stop for a cup of coffee. The woman behind the table serving
the coffe noted the motorcycle attire and struck up a conversation.
She stated that she also rode (as a passenger---that's OK). She
asked if I wore a helmet. My responce was "I don't have a choice, if
I didn' have to I wouldn't." She came unglued and began screaming at
me "Don't you want to be safe?" I moved along.
In my mind there is a difference between safety and protection. If I
want to be safer in a given situation, I learn more about ways to be
safe. If I want to be protected, I buy insurance. Why are people who
don't know me so damn concerned about my safety? If helmets make you
safer why doesn't everyone wear a helmet all the time? Without
thinking about it too much; what do you think would be the major
cause of death in automobile accidents? How come when you read a
story about a motorcyclist being in an accident there is always a
line about whether or not there was a helmet being worn? I don't see
that in any other story---even if there is a head injury being
reported. Don't talk about economics---I don't think that's the
issue---if it were, we would all be wearing helmets all the time.
Thoughts???

Hey Guys---
Last Saturday was the Tacoma Abate Dice Throw. As usual a well put
together event by those kids in Tacoma. We were accompanied on our
South Sound trek by Becky (AKA Wilma) and her new beau Rick. We
started out by the Dome in Tacoma and skirted around the North end
of town to catch HWY 16 across the new Narrows Bridge. Actually, we
went over the Narrows on the old bridge but without any facing
traffic a new experience for me. I remember when the toll gates were
on the Tacoma side of the bridge and you paid both ways---aww well
time marches on.
We picked up Donnie Ahola and his new lady, Rachel, at Alfred's (the
sign-up point in Tacoma---nice joint). So, there were four bikes on
this leg of the ride. At Purdy we took the Shelton cut-off, through
Wauna, Minter Creek, and around the North Bay of Case Inlet to
Leonard K's Boathouse in Allyn. Considering what the traffic can be
like on this route, it wasn't bad this time. They are looking to
cater to bikes at the Boathouse, so as the weather gets better and
the nights get later, this could be an early start late return kind
of one day summer ride (the hint from Seattle would be to take the
Southworth ferry out of Fauntleroy and there's a nice cross country
route that lets you cut Rte 302 just shy of Rocky Bay.)
After Allyn it was through Shelton and hook up with Hwy 101 to
Buzz's in Mud Bay (and you can see why they call it that.) From Mud
Bay it was Freeway to Galloping Gertie's in Tillicum and on to the
Right Spot in Fife for the wrap up and horse play. The day was grey
but mostly dry. We didn't hit any significant moisture until the
ride home---wouldn't you know. Pictures on the web site---
www.irishmckinney.spaces.live.com.
Sunday a quick shot down to Puyallup and a short visit with the Gimp
and Ruthie. Gimp is upgrading his tow package, so we have adopted
his old his old pop-up camp trailer. We're excited about the
possibilities. Squirrel---you still interested in the cargo trailer?
It may be time to talk.
Speaking of which---Marjorie is looking to get off the Sportster, if
you, or anyone you know, might be interested, you can contact her at
marjoriebillings@yahoo.com.

Hey Guys---It's really starting to get to me. And if you have
to ask what, then you're not within two hundred miles of my
voice. I've just about had enough of the cold, grey, drizzly
scene outside my window. Those who agree, stand up, raise your
hands in the air and shout "Amen!" Whew---that feels somewhat
better. Just needed to get the blood flowing.
OK, so last Saturday, up early (I mean, like, set the alarm
clock on a Saturday morning early) and out the door headed for
Enumclaw. It was, of course, grey and misty. We arrived at the
Yella Beak to an empty parking lot. Well maybe we're way too
early; off to town for breakfast. Back at the Beak, one other
bike in the parking lot---"Yeah there's a ride, but it's
tomorrow." Shit, I need to start reading my own stuff. Off again
for home, in the drizzle and the traffic back-ups.
Later that evening we trekked on down to Tacoma (again in the
rain---is there a theme forming up here?) to take part in my
nephew's 72hr film production. Adam, my nephew, had asked
Marjorie and me to play characters in his short film. The
concept is to write, shoot, and edit a short that incorporates a
number of prerequisites (ie: a line of dialogue, a visual or an
item). Adam's a day in the life--the dark side, had Marjorie
cast as a pissed off waitress (that was a stretch) and me
as...wait for it...don't get ahead of me...a biker (what's my
motivation?) They're showing the results at the Rialto theater
in Tacoma on Friday evening. We've got previous commitments, but
maybe we can have a special showing at the Barrel some Friday.
Sunday morning I gave the Hanging Chad a call and the two of us
headed back up to Enumclaw. The weather was better. The event
was a fun raiser for Dutch Phillips, who had been in a very
debilitating accident at the end of February. Dutch is one of
the prime movers in the Biker Friendly Bar concept---"Give
Support where Support is Given." (www.bikerfriendlybar.com)
He's also one of the Deputy Coordinators for ABATE of
Washington, so his involvement is real. Did I mention the
weather was better?
At the Yella Beak, the Hanging Chad and I hooked up with the
Gimp (who has a cool new tat of his name on his left bicep, a
little color would set that whole thing off.) As the cloud cover
began to break up, we headed out on the ride---in the wrong
direction. The organizers (Flagman, Trike Mike and Tony R) did a
really good job of putting things together, with the exception
of one small item---directions. There are some of us that
haven't been everywhere, but I'm working on it. The weather was
good.
One place I hadn't been was Carbonado; if you haven't, you
should. By the time we got to the Saloon the place was packed.
Bar-B-Q in the back yard under sunny skies. The weather was
great. Great for some of those back ways the Gimp turned us onto
out there in East Pierce County.
At the fourth stop (Kerby's), we hooked up with Pam and Jaybird
for the ride to the Royal Bear and the last stop of the day. It
seemed at every stop the number of bikes increased. Sure seemed
like the event was a success---couldn't have asked for better
weather. Pictures on the web site
www.irishmckinney.spaces.live.com.
:::::::::::::::::::::::::::::::::::::::::::::::::::
5/9 Chicken Friday---we have a previous commitment---but that
just means I need someone to uphold the tradition---any takers?
Small chance we might be there late.

heaven or high water (oooh bite your tongue) the riding season

Hey Guys---When last we spoke, I had turned
back home because of a few snow flakes in April.
After composing and posting a letter to all of you, I happened to
glance out the window and catch a glimpse of Blue Sky. I called Brer
Squirrel to find that the group, had not only ridden, but had just
arrived at the Golden Bear in Algona. I saddled up and hustled out
to join them, just beating a hail storm to the Bear by minutes.
I don't think I told you that this ride was in honor of a young girl
by the name of Brooke, who died a couple years ago. She was a
courageous young woman who battled a debilitating disease called---Desquamative
interstitial pneumonitis. The name alone would kill me, yet this
brave young thing fought from the time she was five months old until
she died at the age of thirteen. If you google Brooke Snider or
"Brooks last ride" (their spelling) there is a pictorial of her
funeral that the Great Dave Eady chauffeured. This lady is someone
worth memorializing. Her parents are still paying bills that
insurance wouldn't cover---if you want to help, contact Squirrel at
bcbiker@comcast.net.
From the Bear we visited "The Basement", the inner sanctum of the
Apples (ADG). After which we headed North again toward Renton and
encountered that hail storm I had missed earlier in the day. This
time it was in the middle of Rte 167 at sixty miles per hour.
Ouch!!
Everyone made the Full Throttle Cafe and Lounge at Renton
Motorcycles a little the worse for wear (except the guys in full
face helmets---who couldn't stop giggling). There were door prizes,
50/50, and a silent auction. This rag tag weather worn group raised
about $1,300 for Brooke's parents---congrats guys.
On a side note, as a door prize I got a little Samart---a little of
the artwork that Sam the Howler has been doing lately. I am
impressed with what i've seen so far. Sam, is this stuff up on line
where we can see it yet? Let me know when that happens. Or if it has
happened tell me how I can see it.
Brer Squirrel Ol' Buddy great job under trying circumstances---but
that's the last time you get to pick the day.
---------------------------------------
Speaking of picking the day---a group of the Rebels ended up on the
West side of the Sound for the "Ride for Fallen Riders." They were
smart they took their Reindeer and four wheels (well, maybe not the
Reindeer). But it shows what can happen when you believe and have
that need to support something. Which is it that comes first? The
need to feel free or the need to be free? I applaud all of you who
sucked it up and said "This is Important---appearances be Damned".
---------------------------------------
Heard from Diane d'Patch Lady---she'll be at Downtown HD on First
Saturday for at least the next two months. Look for her also at the
Snohomish Antiques Motorcycle show on 5/18, she'll be somewhere in
the vicinity of Love's Leathers. Tell her you heard it here first.
---------------------------------------
Got invited to the West Side ADG pig roast yesterday 4/26. Turned
out to be more waiting that riding to get there---but you know what
they say---with good friends, time is kinda special. The West Side
put on quite a feed, pig roasted by Pigman and Doc of Band of
Brothers. Got into a nice conversation with Doc and his wife,
Valerie. This was Doc's last event with Band of Brothers, he and the
wife are retiring over East side somewhere---keep in touch
Doc...always looking for a journey and a good destination doesn't
hurt. Met Bonz the new Coordinator for BoB---welcome to the
family---everyone can stand to be a little more coordinated.
Ricky One Ball sure looked Purty on his new '08 Custom---glad you
ducked that barricade. Kato I'd be interested in how long everyone
lasted at the motel. With so much fine food, tra la la time came
early.

Hey guys---Gawd I wish it would stop. I
headed out this morning to take part in a little run Squirrel had
put together and ran into snow at Southcenter---YEAH SNOW. Can you
believe it Snow, in the latter part of April? Anyway I may try to
catch up later as it has leveled off to mixed snow and rain.
Hi how's everyone doing? I feel I was out of the room for a long
time this year. Did you talk among yourselves? It seems like the tax
season was long and hard this year, what with Bush's Bullshit check
occupying everyone's mind and the fact that this was my last season
with H&R Block. What's next I'm not completely sure, but you will be
the first to know as things come together.
A few things about the letter (still haven't figured out what to
call it)---we are now international with the addition of God
Daughter Marcia in Australia. The emphasis is Motorcycles and
Motorcycling, but almost anything goes. Dialog is good, if you
have something to say I want to hear it. I will share as much as
possible, but sometimes I get overwhelmed or maybe just blase.
